July 19,1553: Fifteen-year-old Lady Jane Grey is deposed after a nine-day reign as queen of England. She is executed for treason the following year.
And they said Sharia law was tough.

That's because bleacher seats hadn't been invented yet Bird and people in the back couldn't see properly.

Thanks Mark, had me Greys and Howards mixed up. Yes it was Northumberland who wanted to see the Dudleys become the royal family then.

Ref # 12. Sometimes in Mediaeval and Tudor the severed heads of traitors were stuck on spikes on the castle walls or above the gateway to the city to deter others.

Ref #14. The Duke of Northumberland was a very ambitious man. Not merely content with placing a minor on the throne so he could continue as Regent, he had to marry her off to his own son, thereby gaining the prospect of being father-in-law to the Queen and possibly grandfather to a future King or Queen. I'm sure he had visions of being the founder of the Royal House of Dudley.

Horrors!  Snowbird, I went back and re-read some of the posts on this thread and somehow missed the one where you said Dudley Do-Right goes around building things!  PBA, get in here and save my Dudley's name!

The Howards are the Dukes of Norfolk, 40 miles from where I live.

This is a song about one of the lesser known Dukes who was expelled to America round about 1500.

Jesse James was a lad that killed many a man,
He robbed the Danville train.
But that dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard
Has laid poor Jesse in his grave.

Poor Jesse had a wife to mourn for his life,
Three children, they were brave,
But the dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard
Has laid poor Jesse in his grave.
