I believe he divorced 3. Katharine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn just before her execution and Anne of Cleves. I don't remember reading or hearing that he divorced Katherine Howard. So I think 3 is the answer. Tudorgalusa |

Well, that's debatable. "Divorce" is actually a more modern term & incorrect to apply to Henry's situation. His claim was that he was NEVER married to Catherine of Aragon because of her previous marriage to Arthur & Cranmer upheld that in his decision on it. So Anne Boleyn, in Henry's eyes, was his first wife & he was a bachelor up until that point. However, Anne signed off on an ANNULMENT of their marriage, probably in the hopes that it would spare her if she did whatever Henry wanted. So then in Henry's eyes Jane Seymour was his first wife LOL She died doing her duty so nothing to write home about there. Anne of Cleves was also annulled on the basis of a precontract with the Duke of Lorraine. This was a question that was looked into before the marriage & resolved to Henry's satisifaction, but he grasped at it anyway & Anne was amenable to signing off on it. Catherine Howard, if you recall, called Francis Dereham "husband" & he her "wife", so that was seized upon as evidence of a precontract as well & thereby Catherine was annulled as well. Catherine Parr outlived him so YAY for her. |

So to be strictly accurate the rhyme should read : Repudiated, annulled, died, divorced, beheaded, survived. It doesn't have quite the same ring to it. |
