Feel like talking about something besides ATWT?

You've found the right thread for it!  This is the place for general chat - vacations, books, TV shows, politics, celebrity gossip, etc.

Whatever suits your fancy, feel free to talk about it here - the forum is open.  The one thing you can't talk about, however, is ATWT. (that is what the rest of the board is for!)

We started in Orlando then we moved onto Winter Haven.  Raining here now.  My step son has a game in West Palm Beach today, but I stayed back at the hotel with our 3 year son.  Too long a drive in weather that could end up canceling the games.  It's about 3 hours there and 3 hours back......just would make for an extra long day for him......and for hubby who would be driving there & back.

I was really hoping for better weather too.  I wanted to return to 'winter town' (I live in Michigan & they have been getting hit with snow, snow & more snow so we hear) with a tan.....not working out so good for us right now.....*laughing*

Oh well.....we did take the 3 year old to see Mickey Mouse.

You didn't miss anything Spuds, I just created this thread a minute ago! I thought it would be easier for everybody if we could consolidate all of the OT discussions (which are welcome and encouraged here!) into one convenient place.

Enjoy your vacation!

proudarmywifeLA,

I'm from Northern California - in the Bay Area, specifically. It's raining like it's nobody's business here (in California, we consider moderate rain a "storm"). :) Normally, the weather is much better than this!

Sounds like the weather is much better in Louisiana!

TGIF.... TGIF...

Out of curiosity.... are you all reading anything interesting right now? I'm always looking for good book referrals.

Thanks!

As for what I am reading right now?  Well, I'm a member of a Moms Club which has started a book club.  (The mom's club is for stay at home moms...really a neat thing).  Anyhow, this month we are reading something about 'the secret life of bees'.....don't know the exact title, but it's close enough!  *LOL*

An assortment of comments:

cmteachermom: Never too late to post. I've heard great things about San Antonio (evidently it's a fabulous city, and a great place to raise a family). I've never been there.

mrscreole, I am selective about the people with whom I discuss my soap operas. Sometimes I'll be talking about ATWT to a friend or colleague and somebody passing by will think I'm talking about real people. Then I usually 'fess up and say I'm talking about my show!

Ooh, Spuds, let me know your thoughts of "The Secret Life of Bees". Our book club read that late last year and we enjoyed it. It gives you a lot to think (and talk) about.

I love mysteries/thrillers, LiteraryMysteryLady! I'm heading to the bookstore tomorrow, I'll see if I can find the title at Barnes and Noble.

Anybody else have any good book recommendations?

I live in Oklahoma, near Tulsa.  I've lived here 4 1/2 years.  I'm originally from Pennsylvania.  I really like it here.  The weather fluctuates quite a bit here, too.  One day it's sunny and 75 and the next it's cold and 40.

I live in Oklahoma too, Del City (OKC), and yes the weather here is unreal.  You never have any idea what the next day is gonna be like...and the weather forecasters areLOL they never know either.

If you like the novelist John Grisham at all you will love his new book "The Broker".  I am a big Grisham fan and have read all his books.  Also "The Five People You Meet In Heaven" by Mitch Albom is excellent reading.  Just a couple of choices that I really liked.

I really like this "General Chat Thread".  This is the first time I've seen it so hats off to whoever first brought it up.

I do enjoy the occasional John Grisham book. I recently read "The Testament" and enjoyed that one. There was another one I read a couple of months back - I don't remember the title. And I loved the movie "The Runaway Jury" - not a bad redo of one of Grisham's books.

Speaking of movies, I just realized that I haven't seen any of the movies that were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. I used to go to movies with more frequency, but now that they're nearing $10/ticket (and that's without popcorn!), I'm not going to theatre nearly as often!

PS - We've got two Oklahomans here. I've never actually been there, but I do have some family in Texas (it's not that far, is it?).

Has anyone watched any good movies lately?  I thougth Ladder 49 was great.  I want to see Flight of the Pheonix, but I haven't seen it yet.  I heard Notebook is good, but I haven't seen that yet, either.  Any good recommendations?

We tend to see the family movies first bc we have kids, but once or twice a week after they go to bed we try to watch something.  The kids really liked Shark Tales.  I thought it was ok.

LiteraryMysteryLady, I was at the bookstore today but couldn't remember the name of the book you had recommended to me... it was so maddening! I ended up not buying anything. (Next time I head to the bookstore, I will remember to *actually write down* the name of the book). :)

worldturnsjunkie, I'm sad to say that I haven't seen too many movies in the theatres recently. The last family flick that I had seen was "The Incredibles," and the flick didn't do much for me (however, I had had a pretty rotten day so perhaps I wasn't in the right state of mind for it?).

My mother is always seeing plenty of movies.... (either she goes to the theatre or she does the NetFlix thing). At any rate, she said that "Finding Neverland" was wonderful and that Johnny Depp gave a truly standout performance. She also said the "The Aviator" wasn't bad, but she preferred "Neverland" to it.

Finally, WOO HOO because the sun has come out in the Bay Area! After lots of rain on Friday, we've been blessed with two back-to-back GORGEOUS sunny days, with temps in the low 70s. Days like this remind me of why I love living in California! (quakes and all). :)

PS - proudarmywifeLA, glad to hear about Kaylee and your husband coming home, but I'm sorry to hear that he may have to leave (for Afghanistan?) again. Still, it's a blessing that your husband is back home now.

At our church, we recently had a member who had returned from an extended stay in Iraq. He's a quiet fellow and keeps to himself, but I can't tell you how elated our congregation was to have him back home!

Thanks!!!  As far as we know, he doesnt have to go anywhere again yet...and we are just hoping and praying that it stays that way!!!!

I honestly believe that the best part of them coming home from overseas (besides getting to see them again after what feels like FOREVER!!!!) is the welcome home they get when they get to their hometown.  There is absolutly nothing like it!!!  we had cars parked all along to road for at least a 10 mile stretch from one end of town to the other just to see them come thru.  It was awesome!!!! I will never forget that day as long as i live.

We don't go to the theatre much, either. You are right about the prices.  It's outrageous.  One movie we did take the kids to see was The Polar Express - 3D.  It was awesome.  I would highly recommend seeing it in 3D.  It just isn't the same without the 3D.  3D has really come a long way.

My husband wants to see The Incredibles.  I'm not too crazy about seeing it, but I'm sure he will watch it with the kids once it comes out on DVD.  I'll have to check out Tthe Aviator.  I do want to see Finding Neverland.  I heard it was good.

A book club is a great idea.  I absolutely love to read books but I just never thought about joining a club.  I know a lot of people do join them.  I'll have to think about that.

Book clubs are wonderful. I wanted to join one, but couldn't find one that I liked, so I just decided to start one on my own! (I just got five of my friends together and - voila! - a book club was born). :)

On a different note, do you all have any good vacation recommendations? Once the chaos of works subsides a bit (things have been *crazy* in the office - I've barely been able to keep my head above water lately) and summer rolls 'round, I plan on taking an honest vacation. I'm debating whether to do the tropical thing (Hawaii), the East Coast thing (New York), or the Europe thing (England/Spain).

I've been to all three locations but wouldn't mind going back. My Europe trip was horrible - in large part due to my traveling companion - I won't go into details now, but let's just say that you don't *really* know your friends until you've traveled with them! - so I wouldn't mind going to redeem that trip.

I've been to Manhattan once and just loved it. I wouldn't mind going there again.

However, I am open for other ideas. Any thoughts?

I just watched it and my husband and I just looked at each other!! We came
to the conclusion that when they made this last year they didn't think it
would go over as well as it did, and now they're punting for something good
to go into the story. It sometimes go off track, but has held out interest
to a certain point. However, I'm a Mandy Patenkin fan and he's on CBS
"Criminal Minds". I have 3 vcr's (an additional back up one that works only
when I play with it.) and I tape different shows that may be on at the same
time. My husband watches a lot of sports, so I don't usually tape on that
tv (it's his big screen HD tv.

That's what I thought, too. Sure makes you wonder, doesn't it?

First Katie Holmes gets knee-deep in Scientology (which sort of freaks me out - I don't mean to offend anyone here), then she rushes into a relationship/engagement with someone twenty years her senior, and now she's PREGNANT? I just don't get it - where's the fire? What's the rush?

I used to like Tom Cruise back in the day, but lately, with his off-putting comments and his general arrogance (again, JMHO), I can barely stand to watch him anymore!

all I can say is.. maybe Katie will get post-partum herself.  Wonder what Tom will have to say about that one...

While I wouldn't wish that on anyone......All I can do is crack up and say, OH YEAH! The irony in that is to perfect to pass up.  Maybe he'll get "sympathy" post partum.

Remember when they made such a big stink about "we're not having sex until we're married."  Yeah right!!
I wish them well, even tho their hypocrites!!!  (Confidentially, I always hoped Tom would get back with Nicole)

Good point, expeditionmom about them saying they were waiting until they were married.  I also explicitely remember Katie Holmes saying she is a virgin and is saving herself for her wedding night.  What a crock of crap!

Rumor mill when Tom and Nicole separated was that she was pregnant and miscarried and he couldn't have children, so he felt she had cheated on him.  She swore up and down it was his child, he didn't believe her.

So either Katie has been inseminated using someone else's sperm, Tom really can have kids and for whatever reason chose to adopt with Nicole, or he thought he couldn't but has since found out he can?

I really can't see how they would have her AI before they get married, if that's the case, then that's just stupid.  But then again, look who we're talking about. I agree with Tju when she said that she used to like Tom Cruise but something along the lines that she's lost respect for him...ditto that!

As I might've mentioned earlier, I'm not convinced that a) Katie is pregnant; and/or b) the baby is even Tom's. Like worldturnsjunkie said, Tom's been married twice before, and both marriages ended childless (Tom and Nicole adopted). Now, suddenly, Katie's pregnant. Something doesn't quite add up here.

Like I said earlier, I feel the most sorry for Katie's family. Look at the remarkable change that has happened to their daughter in the last six months alone. Remember, only a year ago, she was engaged to Chris Klein (and had been with him for about five years). Suddenly, she broke off that engagement, started dating Tom Cruise, switched religions, got engaged again, and is now pregnant - all before the wedding!

I have a daughter the same age as Katie Holmes and I can tell you right now I would be soooo unhappy if she were with a man as old and experienced as Tom Cruise.  He has this girl in his clutches and she is in AWE of him. He swept her off her feet. After all, he is a very wealthy SUPERSTAR and she is a young gal that has to be experiencing the glamour and thrill of going with a man of his caliber. But in my opinion he has really gone off the wall in his ways of thinking and religion etc.  He is a nutcase.  His parents live here where I do and they are very nice people. I actually remember many times Tom and Nicole coming here to visit them, and I never actually saw them myself, but many people I know did and said they spoke with them and that Tom was so nice.  They enrolled Isabella and Connor in a private school here at one time and friends of mine were there at the same time and they chatted about he children. So now I am seeing a totally different kind of person. It is almost like Tom is flaunting his new young lover in Nicoles face and wants everyone to know about his personal life. He was never like that before. JMO but I think that Katie is just overwhelmed and is going along with everything he wants.  I think he has her mesmerized.  But as far as being pregnant, SHAME, SHAME!!  The jerk just couldn't wait, could he??? That was his way of making her HIS no matter how they pulled it off.  Tsk Tsk  Ellie

Ah the wonders of scientology lol, I have a feeling that maybe they're trying to get into the limelight a lot.  It seems Katie's career is on hold, especially if she is pregnant.  Ever since Tom divorced Nicole, I've lost respect for him.  He may be a good actor and handsome, but the inner qualities have vanished.

As if Katie Holmes hasn't alienated herself enough, she also fired her publicist on Tuesday and hired Tom Cruise's sister as her publicist. Since she met Cruise, she has fired her publicist, manager, and agent, all of whom had been with her for the last eight years.

I read an article that said she hasn't contacted any of her friends since she met Cruise in April.  Also, there are pictures of her on the set of Mission Impossible 3 and in all of the pictures, there is a woman in the background.  The woman is someone who Katie met in April and has since become her "best friend."  She is well known in the Scientology circle.

We all know why Tom picked Katie, a girl 20 years his junior, cuz a mature woman his own age would be telling him exactly what he could do with his controlling self!

You know, I saw some pictures of Katie Holmes, and it looks like she's reasonably far along in her pregnancy. That would mean - unless I'm much mistaken - that she got pregnant fairly early on in her relationship with Tom Cruise.

Something isn't quite right here. I'm just not buying it. Something is amiss.

I thought I just read somewhere that Katie Holmes is in her fifth month of pregnancy. If so, that means that she and Tom were at it very early on in their relationship! (so much taking things slow!)

Thank heavens for my anonymity. I don't think I could handle life as a a famous person!!!

Ok...those two are just weird.  I read an article saying that Scientology promotes a quiet birth and that Katie will most likely partake in the quiet birth.  A quiet birth is this:  The mother does not take any medication for pain, does the whole birth natural and does not utter a peep or a scream.  Apparently this promote a peaceful birth and thus makes it easier on the child later in life without the negative birth.

I'm sorry, but that's the biggest crock of crap I've ever read. I've had three children and if someone told me to just sit there and be "silent"  I'm afraid I'd have to tell them where to go. OMO!

OK, all I have ever read about Tom Cruise and this Scientology is that he is very strict about it.  I mean look at the way he took shots at Brooke Shields for her taking meds for her depression.  Oh well.  However, here is my sticking point about this religion.  They apparently have strict rules for everything...how about being married before you get pregnant!!!  Where is that one?

Good Point!!!  Too bad he only follows the rules he thinks he can follow because he's "special", and can donate thousands and thousands of dollars.  So in essence, they make allowances for those with money!
