In a couple hours when my husband gets home, we are going to see a 7 year old U2 named Cookie. Sadly his mama had to give him up because she has cancer and had to have an arm amputated. She was no longer able to care for him. We met a guy at a bird fair on Sunday who owns a pet store in a close by town who is caring for Cookie. I had planned on eventually getting a rose breasted too, but after hearing Cookie's story, I feel myself being drawn to him. I don't really know alot obout the umbrellas, have only been around a few as a friend was hand feeding them. We are used to noisy birds already as we have a 11 month old DYH amazon and a baby african grey. We also have 2 conures, 3 cockatiels and a parakeet. I want to learn as much as possible about them. Doug has talked to the guy, his mother and his brother about Cookie. I am hoping that when we go to see him, he likes us. They said he has a vocabulary of 10 words one being mama which he will call out. What do I need to know before bringing him home? What kind of toys do they tend to like?

Michele

The first thing to do is quarantine the bird away from all of your others for at least 30 days, preferably 60.  During that time, have him/her completely vet checked.

Cockatoos are noisy.  Loud.  Ear-shattering.  Be prepared.

This bird is apt to grieve over being separated from his owner.  This can lead to all kinds of difficult and self-destructive behavior.  Be aware.

Toys should be the kind that he can tear up and/or solve a puzzle and/or beat up on.  Of course, the cage must be much wider than the wing-span so he can flap and swing and climb and carry on without hitting the sides of the cage.

Do let us know how this all works out, please.

Michele, what was the result of your visit? Did you decide whether or not to adopt Cookie, or are you still considering?

It sure must be hard for his mama ... my heart really goes out to her!

The visit went well. Cookie was very affectionate with both of us. He has been separated from his mama for atleast a month now and has shown no signs of any problems. He just dosn't like the guys brother much. They think it is because he reminds him of some one his mama knew or he just dosn't like his hat. We are still thinking about it as we do have kids (11, 9 & 7). When we were there they were more interested in the lady's toy poodle. Doug is calling them again today to ask a few more questions. There was also a amazon we wanted to meet also, but we have been unable to contact them. Hopefully soon, I will know if Cookie will be joining our flock.

Thanks for the update, Michele! I'm glad you are really checking into this, as it's a big commitment. Best to look before you leap, so you know what you are jumping into.

It sure seems as if Cookie is a real sweetheart, and I hope that if you aren't the right new home for him, that a special one is waiting for him in the "wings".

Doug call the people with Cookie the cockatoo last night and found out that he was sold. We also finally talked to the people with Jake that double yellow amazon. We will be meeting them at the bird club meeting tomorrow to see Jake and interact with her. If we do like her and decide to buy her, I think a new name will be in order. I just can't bring myself to call a girl Jake. I will let you all know what happens tomorrow.

Good luck on your search. I had an Umbrella. He was very friendly, the one thing I think you should also consider is the amount of powder they give off.

I have an Citron Umbrella and Grey and the dust/powder they give off is incredible. So much of it you always have to dust, vacuum and it gets on your clothes - always. So if you consider a umbrella to your flock make sure you realize the amount of powder you will get too.

Just another thought for you.

Well Doug talked to our friend that we got most of our birds from. She told us about some problems with these breeders that have Jake and the people that had Cookie. The guy that had Cookie said he just wanted to get the $500 back that he paid for him. We found out the other day that he didn't pay anything for him and was not being truthfull. Our friend said that there are issues with the people with Jake and we would just have alot of problems with her if we got her. We trust her alot because she and her family have been alot of help to us since getting our first two birds. I think we will wait for  a little while and get another hand fed baby from her. Doug met a mini macaw and is now thinking he wants one of them next. I was hopping this would work out, but looks like we will be waiting longer.

It is better to wait to get another bird then get a bird that might have problems. IMO
