Nina's Birdy Bread Recipe

2 boxes ofJiffy Corn Muffin Mix
2 eggs
1 cup of applesauce
1 small can of (#303) Libby's pumpkin or
sweet potatoes or yams
1/2 cup finely chopped nuts
1/2 cup of corn grits
1 cup small tiel size pellets
1/2 cup rolled oats

Mix well, add a little water if too stiff, pour into a greased 9x13 pan and bake 20 minutes at 375 degrees. Check for doneness by pressing in the middle of the bread. If it is still squishy it needs to bake a few more minutes.

Homemade Avicakes

Mix even amounts such as:

2 cups crushed cereal..... (Cheerios or Shredded Wheat..)
2 cups crushed pellets or instant oatmeal cereal
2 cups assorted seeds

Add about 1 and a quarter cups of Honey or your own substitute  ..I use honey from this area for myself and the birds.

Stir until mixture is wet but not dripping. You may need to adjust the honey.

Pour the mixture on to a cookie sheet and spread it out......Bake at very low temperature.... 200 - 225 for about 45 minutes....

It's a good idea to score the mixture when half way done.....You can also shape these around craft sticks with a hole drilled at one end for a hanging treat in the cage........These make terrific stocking stuffers or birthday gifts for the birds.

Rice Mess

 

2+ c. water- can use no salt veggie or chick broth, or juice

1 c. rice, can used white and/or brown

1/2 c. pasta. I use spaghetti broken into 1/2'' long pieces, but you can use any variety/flavor

1 c. mixed frozen veggies. if I get the kind w/ greenbeans (I cut them up in pea sized pieces or my tiels won't eat them).

1/2 c. oatmeal

1/2 c. seed

1/2-3/4 c. pellets.

 

other additional add ins are: scrambled eggs, boiled minces eggs, cornbread  or birdy bread crumbled, diced potatoes-irish and/or sweet, diced apples, split peas, barley, lentils, nuts, or anything else you can think of that your bird likes. I vary each batch alittle.

in a large pot, add water, rice, pasta, and (include potatoes here if desired) & veggies. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer til it is tender but still firm and liquid is nearly gone. Turn off and let sit 10-15 minutes til just warm. Add all other ingredients to a large mixing bowl.  mix well. dump cooked food over other and fold in til well mixed.

This makes a large batch, but it does freeze well. you can freeze in ice cube trays, or just in small ziplock bags in amounts to feed for 1-2 days. thaw in refridgerator or warm water in the sink. (be very sure it is sealed well if you use the water method!)
