She has landed on my shoulder and grabbed my braid to keep from sliding off. Think she realises that the top of my head is off limits.... think being the optional word here. The vet was geussing that she is 44 or 45 inch wing span. Hollywood is larger, but don't know by how much. She has been flying more in the house down south lately, but that's 38 (?... can't remember right now) feet of space in a direct line from one end of the living room to the end of the dining room. Lacy, Jeremiah and P come when I call. Sunny and Sailor have minds of their own, and Hollywood is still settling in, but he did let me preen his pinfeathers today! He was practicing his wing flaps too, but as soon as he saw the camera pointed in his direction, he would go into "The pose" so no open shots yet... It'll happen! |

I live in a colonial so all the rooms on the 1st floor are connected in a circle. That would be interesting to see a macaw fly through and come back to the cage. Won't happen with "Crash" He got through three and crashed. One bird with no "landing gear!" Now the poor bugger can't even get a few feet. Got hurt yesterday again. Indy |

My DH was bringing our B&G Dude downstairs -- I was in my office talking on the phone and when Dude heard my voice, he flew from the stairs which are in the middle of the house and around two corners and landed on the back of my chair. I'm not sure how he made it through the doorway. He'll be getting clipped in another week. I'd love to be able to free fly him but would never take the chance because we live in NY and he would never survive a winter outside if he ever got away. We let his wings grow back and let him fly in the house during the spring for the exercise -- but we are extra vigilant about open doors. |

I know how he got through the doorway. I have watched wild birds for so long, wondering how they keep from knocking into things. They must plan ahead because when they start thru a narrow opening their wings are held next to the body. I bet Dude understands to do that. He misses only one flap and he's past the hazard. I love these inflight pics. Amazing. I can never catch a moving object without it being blurred or being bleached out so badly you can't see the subject. Annie |

Shutter speed Annie, and anticipating the motion so you can focus just ahead of the subject. I do admit though I don't always get it either. I was very lucky with this one. |

Yup, mine has a sports setting but the pics are always so overexposed they are worthless. I could do anything with my slr but these digitals are so slow at responding that movement is blurred or the subject is completely gone. I took pics with the slr of my son skydiving that are terrific. From the time he came out of the plane til he touched the ground, not one bad pic. I am too impatient to sit and take a whole card with different settings. If my slr wasn't so heavy I'd go back to it but I shake too much with that weight. Annie |

I use my tripod a lot, especially for the distances with the heavier lenses. Of course nature in a controlled setting and the love of the subject matter can and does help. |

I need to darken it down a bit to bring out those jewel colors... but she is indeed a beautiful bird... and I am prejudiced! Hollywood is learning AR's eagle man stance, bless his feathered heart! It will make the daily checks a lot easier once he has it down. These big guys are something special! |

Alright I have to ask what is the Eagle man stance? |

The eagle man is where she stands on a perch and does the full wing spread like in the first of the two pics... Her full eagle is also spreading her tail feathers. It lets me check for battered feathers or new flights coming in. Sometimes she needs help to crack the keriten sheaths on new feathers coming in. She thinks it's fun, it also allows for hands on when needed. Hi-4 lets me check condition of feet and claws, and sing so pretty lets me see inside her beak. All training is just a name given to a natural response and encouraging each one to respond to that name given... |

Ok thank you for explaining that to me....the only time I see the (full Eagle) is if my daughter comes in to the room Mika doesn't care for her or if someone is wearing red.... she hates the color red...lol.I hate to tell her she is red . I think I might try some of your suggestions about opening the mouth and telling her to sing pretty and see what happens. Mika will let me touch her almost anywhere's she is very loving and gentle....Now Abby on the other hand Ha...ha...ha |

No problem! I actually got the idea because Sailor is not one that will step up, and because she was a paranoid wreck when she came, by teaching AR, Sailor has learned to mimic what she does. Gemma does Stick 'em up, I'll try to get a pic of her doing it... Hollywood is learning too... not bad for 2 months. |
