For several days lately one of the oldsters has been telling us that Twiggy has a sore foot or leg. Neither Don or I can find anything wrong with it when we check her foot and leg over. This morning we noticed while she is at "Work-y" on he t-stand she holds her right leg tucked up into her belly feathers and if she wants to walk across the dowel on the t-stand she has a ver exaggerated limp on her right leg as if she can't bear any weight on the right side. When she is in the office or in her cage or out on eht deck in her big cage she shows no sign of this...... The only time she sees me using my crutch is when I'm working in the kitchen and I can barely allow my right foot to touch the floor or my right leg gives away on me and I'll fall. So she has developed a sympathetic right leg problem when she's helping me "Work". Are these birds perceptive or not? |

That is amazing! LOL......she'll demand a crutch too pretty soon!
Along this same line of conversation - I was chatting with a long time bird mentor about some of the "antics" that we've come across over the years. Our birds really do observe us and fooling them is more like them just going along with us and letting us believe that it was OUR idea.
She was telling me a story about her African Grey, Gillmore. As he was newly adopted back then, she was trying patiently to get him to eat different foods. HEALTHY FOODS! On several occasions during the day she'd offer him a tidbit of something.... One day, she offered him a nut and he took it from her, placed it on the stand and then placed his beak about 3 inches from the food and said "Yuuuuummm.....this is really good" and made lip smacking sounds afterward. All of this while never touching the food. Perplexed at first, it only took her a few moments to figure out what he was doing. Doing exactly what she did to him. She'd never tasted or eaten the treat in front of him.......only PRETENDED to taste it.
So, this morning while playing war of the wits with Moe and trying to get him back inside his cage.....I took his food dish like I've done so many times and pretended to eat out of it....thinking that this would get him in. It has never worked. He'd just sit up there and bark at me. Today.......I picked up his almond and popped it in my mouth! His eyes flashed, his tail fanned.....and the short of it was that he was in that cage and on his food dish in a matter of seconds. We humans certainly are slow learners....

Di I think Twiggy is just a little sweetheart she love you so much she having sympathy pains how cute I just love these African Grey's they are just so clever. Tyco amazes me on a daily basis and make me smile just to relize just how smart they are and the thing they come up with all by them selves Pat |

I got two laughs out of this. Twiggy is definitely a copycat and Moe is such a funny guy, too. I always eat an almond when I give the birds theirs at bedtime. Murphy eats his while I am chewing mine but his head is tilted so he can see me. He never takes his eyes off my mouth. He'd probably come take it away from me if he hadn't already been locked in the cage. Annie |

Yea, I agree Twiggy needs her own crutch just like mama. How funny, she sure learns things quickly. I can't imagine what Charlie would do if I popped a treat into my mouth instead of his dish. He growls at me for giving them to him, he's not a sharing kind of guy when it comes to treats Ekkie |

This is sooo interesting...and funny too. I hadn't thought they would emulate or copy us in that manner.....but when you think about it...if they are going to talk like us...why not act like us too. Now...if you could only teach her how to do the laundry and such...she'd be a huge help. She already knows how to answer the phone and can hold her side of the conversation just fine. I wonder if she'll continue the limp after you get all fixed. That Moe is a riot too....smart guy. I don't know what in the world you would do without them guys in your homes....aren't they a hoot! I had forgotten how much my two like almonds till I was eating some last week. I thought they were going to pull the bars apart to come get some. Now I have to add it to their bedtime snack. |
