Wow, I cannot believe it has been TWO YEARS since this thread was last post on so I thought I better fix that!!!!!

Good grief, are you telling me NO ONE here does any sorts of crafts and hobbies to share? Whether you are a beginner or an expert, been doing it for years or just started it, or maybe just thinking about taking something up and want to know if anyone else does it - let's hear about it! Let's see how many different kinds of crafts and hobbies we can come up with. If you have a camera and have done something you want to share everyone would enjoy seeing your handiwork, too.

Does anyone do anything for charity? Our church just started up this prayer shawl thing where people who know how to knit are making shawls. They are also mentoring those who would like to learn how to knit. Then they are knitting shawls to leave at the church. When someone is grieving they are given one of the prayer shawls. I have also seen places online where you can do different things - for instance one place you could crochet a small garment for preemies which are stillborn. Because they are so small  many parents don't have anything other than a blanket for their baby. This provides them something special to wear for burial. There are quilting sites to make quilts for kids with cancer, too. I heard about that one as my sister is making quilt squares for one of those. Anyway, there are loads of different types of those places. I thought I might find some and list them on this thread in case anyone has a particular skill and would like to make use of it.

My latest thing is making jewelry. I have been learning to do this but just a little here and there. I have so many other things to do that I always feel guilty when I pull my stuff out to "play" - lol. I DID, however, make a really gorgeous bracelet for my cuz for her birthday (IF I do say so myself - I am being so modest!! hee hee) out of Swarovski crystals. I also made matching earrings. She really liked the. Anyway, hopefully I will get more time to do more with this later. I also have made some soap, scented it and then wrapped it up very fancy to donate to our church Countryfest.

Anyway.... hobbies/crafts... what can you come up with? I can think of:

  • quilting
  • cross stitch/embroidery
  • sewing
  • knitting
  • crocheting
  • soap making
  • candle making
  • making jewelry
  • woodworking
  • painting
  • drawing
  • photography
  • scrapbooking
  • stamp collecting
  • coin collecting
  • postcard collecting
  • button collecting
  • bell collecting
  • doll collecting
  • teddy bears- collecting and dressing up
  • doll houses
  • collecting something like Coke product items or items for a certain sports team
  • leatherworking
  • rock collecting/rock polishing

K, what else?

Monette, do you  know how to knit or crochet?

Monette W.

Well, Monette W. I'm not quite sure how to answer that.  You see, 17 years ago I started crocheting a pink afghan for my "expected" granddaughter Holly.  I only knew one stitch so I just worked on it until I thought it looked wide enough then turned it around and started back the other way.  LOL  After I got it about 3 feet wide and 5 feet long I stopped and put it away in a bag with my yarn in my back closet and forgot about it.  I knew the edges were not straight and I really didn't know how to finish it.

A few weeks ago Holly's older sister Ginny was here and found that bag and asked me what it was.  She nearly cracked up laughing when I told her and how long it had been there.

Holly will be 17 in June and now has her own baby, Lexie, who was born Sept. 25, 2006.  I have the bag sitting beside my rocking chair now.  After 17 years, I'm not sure I remember how to crochet!  Sometime I'm going to get off this computer long enough to try doing something with it then give it to Holly for Lexie.  Better late than never, right?   So, do I know how to knit or crochet?  Don't bet on it!

LOL! Well then when I visit I will show you how to finish that blanket! :)

My very first crochet project was a baby blanket for a friend of mine's first baby. When I was done one side was straight and the other side looked like this:  (      I guess I'm not so good with counting stitches! lol   I just pinned it down and steam ironed it straight. It's been rectangled ever since! :)   (oh, and I liked it so much I was selfish and kept it for MY first baby years later. haha)

Well, sounds like we would make a good pair, Monette.  Don't take too long getting here though, because I need to finish this pink afghan somehow and then get started on a blue one!  Of course, I know you are very busy right now getting your new home ready so you can move into it.  I'm glad you kept the first blanket you made because that's pretty special.  I would have kept it too.

I don't know any fancy stitches or anything, just single, double and triple. Somehow I got waves on the edge of my blanket which really worked out great. Don't know how that happened though! lol

Spring break is coming up. We'll see if kids and I can make a trip out there for a day or two if we can afford it.
