A "Sweet" Self-Portrait
WHAT YOU NEED
* Sturdy paper plate, 8 1/2 inches in diameter (one for each face) * Yarn (yellow, brown, black & red) * Felt squares (yellow, brown, black & red) * Narrow decorative ribbon * Pipe cleaners * Colored markers and crayons * Craft glue * Safety scissors * Table top or hand mirror * SweeTARTS
HOW TO DO IT
* Set all the items above on a flat, covered, work surface.
* Give the children a hand mirror and ask them to study their faces.
* Now give the children a paper plate and ask them to create a self-portrait using the materials that are on the table.
* Let the children surprise you with their finished works of art or give them the following help and suggestions:
o Help them cut out yarn or felt pieces to the length that best resembles the length of their own hair. Arrange it around the rim of the paper plate and secure it with craft glue.
o For a girl you can add ribbons and SweeTARTS to decorate the hair.
o Use SweeTARTS for the eyes, nose and dimples, gluing them with craft glue.
o Add a smile with a colored marker or crayon. Eyelashes can be added as well if desired.
o Eyeglasses can be fashioned out of two pipe cleaners twisted together to form frames. Punch holes in each side of the paper plate and insert the end of each pipe cleaner to hold the glasses in place.
TIPS
* If you want to display these portraits in your children’s rooms, just make a loop from a pipe cleaner and hot glue it to the top back of the plate.
FOLLOW UP FUN
* Take your children on an outing to your local art museum. Show them self-portraits that famous artists have painted as well as many other kinds of art, such as collages, sculpting, and pottery. * After the art museum visit, ask your child to pick an artistic expression that they would like to try. Simple collages made from colorful paper scraps and craft glue is a great beginning art project.
All activities should be parent supervised. Parents, please make sure that the tools and items needed for a project are appropriate for your child.
