"Hearing Or Experience?"
"We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old." Psalms 44:1
It's good for one generation to pass the testimony of the wonderful works of God to the next generation- and they should. But the knowledge of the Lord God should never be confined to "hear say" alone. Each generation should have their own encounter and experience with the Living God and His marvelous works. This is not only true for each generation, but also for each individual. God desires that we not only "hear" about Him but know Him. "Hearing" is the first step- not the end.
"Faith cometh by hearing". Hearing about the Lord starts the process- it should bring us to that place where we desire a personal experience with Him. Once we have a personal experience, our faith is taken to a whole new level. Job was a worshipper and a man of prayer and intercession. Yet he reached a point in his life where it became more than just what he heard, but what he experienced. "I have heard about thee by the hearing of the ear; but now mine eye seeth thee." (Job 42:5)
Just hearing about the Lord- Who He is and what He's done- is wonderful but it's not enough. Maybe you learned about the Lord at your grandfather's knee- "from your 'fathers'". But He has got to be more than your grandmother's God or your father's God. He has to become your God- one you know personally, intimately. Each generation has a responsibility to the next generation- to tell them what the Lord did for them in their days. But the next generation also has a responsibility- it's to "take up the torch" for themselves. Then when the time comes they should be the ones passing it on. Which generation are you in? Passing or receiving? Are you receiving what has been passed to you and experiencing the Lord in a personal way? Are you passing it on to the next generation?
Have a great day. It's more than just hearing it, it's experiencing it for yourself.
