My doctor has been giving me pain medication for a chronic pain condition for a year and a half.  Now he tells me that he doesn't want to give it to me anymore.  It was the only thing that somewhat worked.   What do I do now?  How do I convince him I need this medication?  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanx
chuwwy

Hmmm, that sure does seem strange!  You need to speak with him and ASK him WHY he does not want to give it to you anymore.  Is he planning on giving you something else?  I would really hate to see you find another Dr. but if he does refuse to help you out, then get the phone book out and start looking.  Please though, you really need to ask him what his plans are in treating you first.  Just maybe he wants to try another medication.  I wish you luck and try not to get stressed over this yet.

First of all, welcome.  Welcome to the family.

I'm Dan, one of the managers here.  I'm sure others will be by to help out.  But I do want to welcome you.

Let's see.  You're Canadian.  I am not sure how your system works.  If you were in the lower part of North America, I would say to get a new doctor.  We can change them as often as we want to.  But again, I don't know how that works up there.

Are you keeping a pain diary?  That often helps.  If a doctor can see your pain in hard cold numbers, they are more likely to prescribe narcotics.  Over on the left is a link to Strategy for Medical Control of Pain .  Just click on this and see if it doesn't help.

Also there's a couple other links.  one is A sample Pain Chart and the other is Sample Graph of Pain Diary if you're handy with spreadsheets like Excell.

What you need to do is probably establish a baseline pain level with the narcotics you're taking.  Then, if he custs you off of them, keep track of your pain and go back to him and show him how your pain has gone up.

Good luck and let us know how this works out.

Welcome again,

Dan
