Here we go again. At my last doctors appointment my PCP tried me on Kadian 20 mgs a day, well more pain so he yeah upped my dose to 40mgs 2 X's a day. MORE pain. Now I just called him because I can no longer take the pain, it is running up the back of my head, neck and down my arms let alone my hips, butt and legs to my ankles. He is now trying me on Opana. I do not know the dosage yet. Come on why am I that different that none of these darn (I want to use stronger words but don't want to offend anyone) drugs work for me. I can't take that these are making me worse. WTH? Do you guys usually have some sort of success with these narcotics? I feel like I am whinning too much to you guys but since I am home alone...... Should I just give up totally on narcotics? I just want something to take it down a couple of notches gosh darn it. I am going to run out of tears and my nerves to boot. Just whinning Kim |

Kim, you may be one of those people who just doesn't respond to morphine. Are you keeping a pain diary and writing down what your pain levels are every day? Don't give up totally. There are still some things that you can try. But let your doctor think of them. Sooner or later he will come the point where he thinks of Methadone, which almost always works, and at low doses too. Dilaudid is another option that's stronger than morphine or Hydromorphone. Hugs and lots of love, Dan |

Dan thanks for the advice, I have already Dilaudid and just like everything else it gives me all the possible side effects and causes me more pain. I have never heard of Methadone for pain, isn't that the stuff they give drug addicts to come down off drugs like cocaine? I am from the boonies and know nothing about this stuff except what I hear on T.V. lol. My left hip, down my leg to my knee hurts and my right ankle and foot have a charlie horse; for the last 3 hours. UGH! I hate that narcotics don't work, there has to be something out there that works for me. My pharmacist said he did try me on Opana about a year ago but he only gave me ten. |

Methadone is being used more and more for chronic pain. That was what the doctor that I presently see for my pain started me on when I first started seeing him. Works fantastic! Heck, I wouldn't mind being changed back to it right now if it would work like it did then. But I didn't like the getting off of it and on to something different part of it. I had a small bit of withdrawal. You are correct that Methadone is what they give addicts when they are trying to get them off of drugs. Medical research recently however, has proven Methadone to be a very effective and reliable drug for the treatment of pain. It is particularly good for chronic pain. It has something to do with it's half life, how long it stays in your system, etc. I don't understand all of that, AT ALL. Anyway, it's good stuff. Maybe you wouldn't have all of the bad reactions from it. tomcat |

That's the reason they have SO many different types of narcotics out there. Some people get relief from Kadian; others don't. I took Avinza, basically same type of medication as Kadian; and I got very depressed. I've never had problems with depression....so thought that it was the medication that was causing the depression...and I was right. My PM doc asked me if I wanted to go on something for the depression or change the Avinza. I told him I wanted to change from Avinza to something else, and I did....and no more depression! I never had had this before from any other medication...so anything can happen. Right now, I'm back on Oxycontin. That seems to work the best for me for my pain. I'm on very high doses though....which is a problem. When I had my total knee done I had problems with getting ahead of the pain levels. And they would not prescribe the same dosage that I was taking at home...they said it was 'too much'...yeah, right. My PM doc did not go to that hospital, so that presented a problem....but he did talk to my surgeon and I decided not to go to reahab, which was the best decision I ever made! My pain doc was able to take care of my pain from home....and he increased my pain meds so that I was more comfortable. Hope they find something that works for you...and soon, too. Hang in there! Hugz, Dee |
