Ahhh, I see.
Well, hon. There's a difference between someone who takes pain pills to get high and someone who takes them for pain. There's a BIG difference.
The person who takes them to get high, and subsequently becomes a drug seeker and an addict, has no pain. Or, he or she has no physical pain really. They take the pain pills to get an effect, and to feed a psychological need. l
A person who takes pain medication for pain, just feels the pain get better. He or she takes the pain medication like a diabetic takes insulin, or a heart patient takes nitroglycerin. We take our pain meds to stop the pain. We get no feeling of being high from them. The pain just gets better. Typically, the pain doesn't go away completely, it just gets tollerable.
Over time, we become dependent on our meds, just as a diabetic is dependent on his or her insuilin, or a heart patient may be dependent on his or her nitroglycerin. If the medication is stopped, our pain returns and we go through withdrawal. So withholding pain meds at that point in time is a bad thing. However, we're not addicted like an addict is addicted.
A pain patient isn't going to sell his or her body for some pain meds. For one thing, it would probably hurt too much. For another, we retain some pride in ourselves. We're not junkies. And we know it. Yes we take high doses of narcotics, some of us, but we do it only because we must.
So rethink your position, please. You are not your father. He had a disease called addiction. You have a condition called pain. His disease is caused by the very medications that help you with your condition.
Hugs and lots of love,
Dan
