I was on the Fentanyl patch, starting at 25mg and worked up to 100mg. It did help with the pain; however, there was one serious side effect: rather than release the medication into my body over a period of 72 hours, I would get a full three day dose in a matter of 24 hours. Thinking it was the brand of patch, my doctor wrote the script for another brand. Same thing happened. I obviously had to stop the use of Fentanyl all together as it was poisioning me. Has anyone else had this problem?

I started out on 25mcg of Duragesic but with increased pain the dosage was increased to 50mcg and still again with much increased pain of my SI joint (right side) the dosage was increased to 75mcg.

It does help my pain but, the side effect of constipation is aweful! I walk daily on my treadmill, drink no less than 2-3 liters of water daily and take stool softner (fiber) I am so tired of taking these meds for pain and also must use Lortab 7.5 q 4-6 hrs as needed for break thru pain.

I am awaiting approval by the ins comp for the implantation of the SCS (spinal cord stimulator) for the treatment of my chronic lower back pain. This is after all conservative treatment was done and last but not least a lumbar decompression with fusion this past November. I had a week trial placement and it was great, with NO Lortab needed at ALL!!

I have chronic lower back pain esp with the SI (sacroiliac joint) on the rt side. I had Legg-Calves-Perthes disease of the right hip as a child.

Would love to chat with anyone who has similiar difficulties.

Thank you
Chesserpup

I tried the Fentanyl 25 patch one time and felt overly medicated. I made it 12 hours and took it off mainly because it was burning my arm. I still have them and have considered using them again, if I could only get past that burn. Anyone else know how?

Hugs,
Maryan

Hi,
I have just recently been put on the fentanyl patch and side effect wise have found it really good compared to some of the narcotics.  I started on the Duragesic 25mcg patch and 40mg of methadone among others, which went down from the 75mg that I was on before the switched me to the patch. I havent had any problems with the patch and actually find my self to be more awake but the pain is still far from be controlled so my doctor increased my fentanyl patch yesterday.   I have previously had bad side effects with many other narcotics so my doctor thought it would be best to increase slowly on the patch especially because there is no middle ground between the 25mcg and 50mcg and apparently this can be a fairly large jump.  So with this increase I am currently on 1and 1/2 of the 25mcg fentanyl patch.  I dont actually start the extra 1/2 patch till Friday.

Wow, there's a bunch of people I've not seen before, even though you've been with us for a while.  I've just not seen you post before.  So welcome to the message boards.  I'm glad you're here.

Our truly new person would be Steph, so welcome, Steph, to our family here.  I'm Dan, one of the managers.  And I'm sure there will be others along who will say hello too.

Over on the left is a lot of information on dealing with Chronic pain.  Let us know if you have any questions, OK?

Now, let me see if I can answer some of the ones you ask...  Drago, I never heard of that happening before.  I'm sorry.  I would call the manufactuer and see what they have to say.

Chesserpup, I am glad the SCS is working out for you.  I'll keep you in my prayers.

Healing hugs and much love,

Dan

My Dad (84) has been on the Fentanyl patch  for several months (at 50 mg now), and it's working great for him!! He used to sleep all the time when he was on Vicodin, but now he's a lot more alert and his pain is pretty much under control. Doing better than he has in a while. Tools around the house in his wheelchair and does some stuff for himself now. Big improvement!!! Just thought I'd throw in a success story here regarding the fentanyl patch.

I have been on then patch for 2 months now and no pain but want to sleep half of the day I use a sleeping pill 11pm go to sleep midnite and wake up 5-7am usually.  when patch started the sleepiness Dr Pharmacist said to stop sleeping pill and my relafen.  Could not sleep hardly at all but still sleepy in daytime.  Friend on internet said I should ask for adderall not sure of spelling but have had no answer to that request as The Dr friend says he gives it to pts to self medicate as needed for wakefulness and energy.

Any opinions?

Paul

Aderal is amphetamine salts.  It works great for somnolence and sleepiness.  It counteracts the effects of the narcotics so that you have a lot of energy even though you're taking a lot of narcotics.

The problem with it, of course, is that it takes more and more of it to be effective.  So I wouldn't take it unless I knew I had the discipline to "rest" from it on a regular basis.  Take if for a few days, and then take a few days off from it.  That way the same dose is effective over time.

God bless,

Dan
