MCGILVARY/MCGILVRAY/MACGILIVERIE/MCGILVERIE ?Finlay is my 7th great grandfather. I don’t have any info about him. His son Alexander (B 8/4/1736 Dores, Inverness, Scotland) married Emilean McBean on 1/4/1769 in Dores, Inverness, Scotland. Alexander and Emilean had at least 5 children, including Donald (B 6/9/1760 Argyleshire, Scotland; D 15/4/1867 Australia). Donald married Mary Livingstone on 17/3/1780 in Arglyeshire, Scotland. Their son, Alexander (Sandy) was born between 1787-1790 in Ardnamuchan, Argyll, Scotland and died 15/4/1867 in Australia.

Any help with this family would be appreciated. I know it is a Scottish family and I hope there is someone who can help. I haven’t had much luck with this one due to the many different spelling of the name.

Hi
I'll be at the Scottish Records office this Wednesday and will see if I can find anything further for you on your McGilvrays.  Since anything for the time frame you are looking at will be in the Old Parish Records, it will depend if the parish that they came from kept records back to those dates.  However, if anything turns up I'll post it here after Wednesday.
Fingers crossed.
Teri

Hi Cherie

Teri found this info at the Scottish Records Office yesterday and she asked me to post it here for you.  So here goes:

Finlay McGilvray, pensioner, Of Culcabock, married Ann Fraser of Kings Street, Inverness Parish on 14 December 1835.  The service was conducted by the Rev Alexander Clark.

Their son Alexander was born on 8 April 1836 in Dores Inverness.

Found no other children born to this couple.

Alexander McGilvray married Emlie McBean on 1 April 1768 in Dores Parish, Inverness.  This information was taken directly from the parish register so is correct.  Cherie, you had a different date (1.4.69)

Children born to Alexander McGilvray and Emlie McBean

24 February 1769: Isobell McGilvray.  Baptised on 16 February 1769
31 August 1770; Donald McGilvray. Baptised on 6 September 1770
3 September 1771 Donald McGilvray.  Baptised also on 3 September
2 January 1774 John McGilvray.  Baptised on same day
7 August 1776  Alexander McGilvray, Baptised on same day

All of the children were born at Achnabat, Dores, Inverness.   I can only assume that Donald, born 1770 must have died when the child born the next year was then named Donald too.
Cherie again you have a different date for birth of Donald  born 1760 in Argyll although you know that Alexander and Emlie were not married till much later than that date.  Teri has a feeling that you have moved on to a different branch of the family here as you say Donald, born 1770 or 1771 was married to Mary Livingston in 1780 in Argyll.  ( he would only have been 9!!)

Teri thinks that you now need to take that which is from the parish registers above and work out the dates again from there on.   You also thought Donald had been born in Argyll but Alexander McGilvray and Emlie McBean remained in Dores, Inverness.  If you go back to the drawing board with this, and then revert to us, Teri says she will be happy to continue searching next time she is at the records office.

Marian and Teri,

Thank you so much for your information. I have confirmed my information up to Donald McGIlvray (B 1750) with certificates I have. I have removed Donald from the family of Alexander and Emilean McBean and have been searching through IGI and Scotlandspeople for hints as to who his parents may have been.

My sources for Alexander and Finlay were from other ancestors so they may also have the wrong info.

So now I am seeking information on the parents of Donald McGilvray/McGilverie who was born on 6 Sep 1750 in Argyleshire, Scotland - probably Ardnamurchan as Donald's son Alexander was born there between 1787-1791.

Cheers

Cherie
