Yes, there is a specific reason for the name Jaguar.
I was visiting an archeological site and entered a place (closed to the public but open to an archaeologist friend) where were the perfectly conserved remains of a temple to Mitlantecutli. He is the god for the deads. It's a skeleton with a big hat, a band round the waist flopping between the legs and sandals. Awful!
But my friend was lost in contemplation.
For courtesy's sake, I kept contemplating the skeleton.
And then suddenly the face became the face of a Jaguar.
I didn't know what to think but was caught by the power surging from that face which touched the three friends there too.
Then the surge of power disappeared and we looked at one another and we all recognized that we had lived through a very similar experience, all seeing a Jaguar, with slight personal differences.
Jaguars were not on my list of friendly animals. I wondered what kind of bad events might happen. However that night in a dream I saw a Jaguar playing with its kittens and was told that I too was one of the kitten.
The Jaguar in the Olmec culture is the symbol of Mother Earth.
