Puppy Love
Mary Lou 1967-68
This is the story of puppy love!
It all came about years ago, oh
probably about 35 yrs. I met this
pretty, sweet girl in a round about
way. I was a sophmore in high school.
I had a study hall second period after
lunch, so every day I'd get a hall
pass from Mrs. Wilson, she wouldn't
even ask me why or even look up from
what she was doing. So I'd always carry
some smokes with me after lunch. I go
out the back stairway so old baldy
wouldn't see me, I'd take the taps out
of my shoes and sneak down to the junior
high bathroom so I could go out the side
door that led outside to the shop and
FFA building.
Well one day this pretty sweet girl, Mary Lou
said, "I've been watching you." I laughed "Oh
yeah." I knew she was an eight grader, and her
name because her sister was in my class. So
anyway Mary Lou said "I know you're gonna
go smoke a cig now." Now I was laughing
and I said "How'd you know that?" She
smiled and winked "I know things" laughing
at me.She said "Don't you know smoking is
bad for you?" But she followed me outside
and I slunk into the corner where I always
smoked and lit up. She came over close and
said "Hey give me a drag." So I did and then
she said "I'm cold can I get in that corner
with you." I moved over and said "come here
sweet thing" and she put her arms around me
shivering and I wrapped myself around her and
she gave me a kiss on the lips. Next thing you
know we're kissing and man I was in love. She
said "Are you going to be here tomorrow, Dale?"
"Sure am!" I grinned. She mouthed the words,
"I Love You" and I laughed and winked, then
snuck back in going up the back stairs to
study hall.
I couldn't quit thinking about her and how
pretty she was and what a good kisser. I smile
just thinking of it but I was young and had a
huge crush on her. She was so funny and cute.
We met the next day and I looked forward to it
all day long thinking about kissing her and
just listening to her sweet laugh. She was fun.
So this goes on for about three or four months
and then one day the principle catches us and
down to his office I go. He says "No more hall
passes for you Clark. And come in Saturday for
detention and so that was the end for me and
Mary Lou, but I saw her every now and then at
the ball games, movies and town, but she got
herself a boy friend. Man I was heartbroken but
every time she looked at me she would wink and
smile. I guess it was puppy love for us. I wanted
to see her but her sister told their dad that I
was older and real wild, what a hoot, and he
forbid her to see me and said I'd better stay away.
All thanks to her jealous sister, I though
I still think about Mary Lou, even after all these
years gone by.
