Boy, 8, killed in Mass. gun show accident

WESTFIELD, Mass. (AP) - An 8-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair.

The boy lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman's Club, police Lt. Lawrence Vallierpratte said.

Police said the boy, Christopher Bizilj (Bah-SEAL) of Ashford, Conn., was with a certified instructor and called the death a "self-inflicted accidental shooting."

As the boy fired the Uzi, "the front end of the weapon went up with the backfire and he ended up receiving a round in his head," police Lt. Hipolito Nunez said. The boy later died at a hospital.

The boy's father and older brother were also there at the time, a gun club member and school official said. Francis Mitchell, a longtime member and trustee of the club, said he saw the boy's father supporting his son from behind after the shooting.

Although the death appears to be an accident, officials were investigating.

It is legal in Massachusetts for children to fire a weapon if they have permission from a parent or legal guardian and are supervised by a properly certified and licensed instructor, Lt. Hipolito Nunez said. The name of the instructor helping the boy was not released.

The event ran in conjunction with C.O.P Firearms and Training

"It's all legal & fun—No permits or licenses required!!!!" reads the ad, posted on the club's Web site.

Messages left on answering machines for the club and the C.O.P. group were not returned Monday.

Death at show fuels US gun debate

New questions have been raised about US gun laws after a boy aged eight shot himself in the head with a submachine gun at a Massachusetts weapons fair.

Christopher Bizilj died after losing control of a recoiling Uzi submachine gun as he fired it at a pumpkin.

Both the boy's father and an instructor were present when the accident happened on Sunday at the gun show in Westfield.

State legislators are now considering drafting a bill banning under-21s from firing automatic weapons, reports say.

"We should take swift action to provide some reasonable restrictions on this type of unreasonable practice," Congressman Michael Costello told the Boston Globe newspaper.

"It's almost indescribable that within a year of leaving a booster seat, an eight-year-old can be holding a submachine gun."

{ Just wait and see the NRA and it's hacks fight any regulation set up to see that this sort of thing never happens again. If the NRA were responsible for airplane safety instead of the Federal Aviation Administration....planes would be falling out of the sky daily!}

Obviously these idiots don't have enough sense to realize that there are members of full-time military and guard units that have people under the age of 21 handling "full auto" weaponry on a daily basis...... I am quite sure this even goes for the peoples republic of massachusetts........typical liberal knee jerk response to a non-issue.............

RBshoots1- I am sure there are hamas camps where 10 year old shoot automatic guns- oh not Uzis- they are after all Israeli but AK47s etc- so would you have us be like them??? You gun nuts are nuts. Use a little maturity grow up. Rifles are fine. In Louisiana lots of men take their sons deer hunting but they don't put Uzis in their hands and they train them in gun safety first.

My point ransomed is this...... what happened to that boy was a tragic accident plain and simple.....accidents occur that is a fact of life.... so to try and use this to further a polictcal agenda is rediculous and yet that is exactly what some are attempting to do..... How do you think that father feels? Do you believe he intended for his son to die? Were you there to see exactly what happened? I have had my daughters shooting since they were 5 yrs old..... they were shooting my 9mm pistol at that age....granted it was not a full auto uzi but it was a firearm none the less...... While I was undergoing Basic at MCRD San Diego many moons ago... a young recruit shot himself in the head while on the range undergoing training on the 1911 .45 auto all under the careful and watchful eyes of the training staff....... should we outlaw the use of .45's by the military because of one accident? No we shouldn't.......Should we outlaw the use of cars because someone who has been driving for 50 yrs and has never had an accident or even gotten a ticket then suddenly loses control and kills himself and possible others? No we shouldn't......Accidents happen...get used to it.....

every good parents knows that in order to inoculate their young children from the trauma associated with killing and train them properly for todays joystick wars, they must provide their kids with the video games 'call of duty, grand theft auto and left behind: eternal forces' before EVER letting their kids use a real weapon ...

Everybody here knows my position on the ownership of firearms, but on this occasion, this is not the point.

If one was to accept that the ownership of a firearm was not only a right, but neccessary for self defence, then a weapon such as an Uzi is not it, particularly when set to automatic, where it is wildly innaccurate at ranges over 50 yards and only the steadiest of practiced, well trained hands will prevent an almost indiscriminate spray of fire.

The only advantage I see in it is its ability to make a lot of noise, which admittedly, to anyone but the seriously committed criminal, might be enough to discourage them.

It is however, a very good assault weaon for confined areas when house clearing etc is required....

5 years old and shooting-------------- sounds like child abuse to me. That is nuts- just plain nuts. I am sure the father feels terrible. That does not excuse the lack of appropriate judgement. He may just turn around and sue the gun show for allowing this to happen. You know there are signs @ Disneyland- one cannot get on fast rides unless one meets the size requirement which usually goes with age. Yet you seem to think that there should be no restictions age or any other when it comes to guns and your logis is really specious. A 70 year old driver having an accident is not the same as an 8 year old. @ least the elderly driver had experience and knowledge. Accidents happen yes they do but this did not have to happen had the father used better judgement. He will regret letting his son do that for the rest of his life. Better judgement and he coudl have watched his son grow up. Doesn't equate with the military either. I think you are nuts.

Having been a Pediatric nurse and having seen children in the ICU and having reported suspected child abuse my take on this is quite different from yours.

No, it was not child abuse, just rank stupidity on the part of the stall owner, and most of all the father....who ought to be horsewhipped out of court if he does sue....

my point ransomed was that experience does not prevent acidents.....this was an accident pure and simple.... Dad used some bad judgement no question.... and no teaching a child at a young age what a firearm can do is not at all child abuse... it is education.... not once during their lives while living at home did I ever have to worry about my daughters misusing my guns.... they were shown from an early age how to handle them and about gun safety....they knew that I would take them out and let them shoot them whenever they wanted.... and you may be suprised by this, but very rarely did they make that request.... I think because the curiousity had been satified.....had they been boys that would have been different I am sure... but rarely ever did they ask to shoot one of my guns and to the best of my knowledge did they ever take them out without my knowledge.........
