1996:

THE FIGHT FOR PEACE.

Under the watchful eyes of a legend
Stands a small country town.
A close-knit community
Where people are friendly.
Looking out for one another.
Where the perils of everyday life
Cease to exist.

People are never afraid
To open their doors to strangers.
People are kind and caring,
Friendly and helpful.
In a place of joy,
A place of laughter,
We would not have to stand
Face to face with evil.
But we must create a force
That will stamp out those perils.
For in the real world
This is what must be done.

2008:

THE FIGHT FOR PEACE.

The ghostly town still stands.
Its people so full of love,
With their legend watching
over them
Like an angel from above.

Battles were fought
By the gallant and bold.
Battles were fought
By the young and old.

With chains of steel
And an almighty hand,
They fought the evil
That came to this land.

They fought not with weapons,
But hearts filled with love
Of the kind that comes
From Heaven up above.

With the aid of their legend,
They fought on and on,
Until all traces
Of evil had gone.

They won the battle -
the fight for peace,
But the war goes on.
It will never cease.

As for the legend -
well, it's no story.
It's love that helps them.
Love, hope and glory.

In an ideal world; Lynn, wouldn't it be wonderful if more places zere like this,

enjoyed both your tributes; but really liked the way you used rhyme in your second; well done, Zy x

Hi all and thanks for the lovely comments!
We may be in the 21st Century now, but we haven't really changed at all, have we?
We're still at war - perhaps more at war now than we've ever been before (in my lifetime, anyway).

I wrote my original poem just weeks after the Dunblane massacre. A massacre in a British school was (almost) unheard of up until then. I dedicated my poem to the victims and their famlies.

I rewrote it on a whim a few days ago - but only to drag my muse away from her Christmas holiday.

I realised this was a tribute of something somewhere, Lynn, it was a dreadful happening, but what really catches the readers attention is the use of the word love in it's repetition as a healing alternative to returned violence, well done with that, it worked well...Zy x

me too. (nearly missed it, that is)

I remember the shock and outrage well, Lynn. Both are excellent tributes, but if I had to choose, I'd go for the revision.
