SUBJECT: Admiral Piri Reis World Map

Dear Professor Hapgood,

Your request for evaluation of certain unusual features of the Piri Reis World Map of 1513 by this organization has been reviewed.

The claim that the lower part of the map portrays the Princess Martha Coast of Queen Maud Land Antarctica, and the Palmer Peninsula, is reasonable. We find this is the most logical and in all probability the correct interpretation of the map.

The geographical detail shown in the lower part of the map agrees very remarkably with the results of the seismic profile made across the top of the ice-cap by the Swedish-British Antarctic Expedition of 1949.

This indicates the coastline had been mapped before it was covered by the ice-cap.

The ice-cap in this region is now about a mile thick.

We have no idea how the data on this map can be reconciled with the supposed state of geological knowledge in 1513.

The Piri Reis map is a proven, genuine document that was made at Constantinople in 1513 A.D.

It is a copy of a map made at an earlier date.

It unequivocally shows the South Pole free of ice.

It shows mountains, streams, various land masses etc. all in the proper size and proportion. It even shows the flow of the rivers and streams in the right direction. (Remember, all of this was under ice today when the copy, much less the original, was made)

It is also a known fact that the South Pole was not discovered until 1818 more than 300 years after a copy of the original map had been made.

But here is the key fact�?most of the South Pole has been covered by ice for thousands if not millions of years.

A small part of the Antarctic coastline found on the Piri Reis map may have been free of ice as early as 6000 years ago but the rest of the land mass remained buried under ice much longer than that.

In order to draw a map of such large scale and correct proportion (other continents can be found on the map) it would have to be argued that it was done from a point thousands and thousands of feet above the Earth. Why? Because accurate maps of this sort did not come into existence for several hundred years�?until accurate sea-going clocks were discovered which made possible the precise measurements of latitude and longitude.

Professor Albert Einstein and John Wright, president of the prestigious American Geographical Society, were made aware of the Piri Reis map. Both concluded that further scientific investigation was warranted.

What have our scientists done with this spectacular discovery? They've ignored it.
