Walking along the pathway of life one fine day, I came across three strange men. One was walking straight forward, while he looked directly ahead. Another was walking all over the path, looking at where he was at that given moment. The last was walking backwards, looking at where he had jsut past, and at the way he had come. Thinking this to be very strange, I went to talk to the first fellow and asked him, "Where are you going and why do you stare so intently at where you are going?" He answered and said," I am trying to follow the future, if you cannot see where you are headed, how will you know where to go?" Thinking this an interesting answer, I then went to the second fellow, and asked," Why are you so occupied with the present?" He told me, " You should always know where you are, if you do not, how will you know if you have beenthere or not?" Thinking this answer stranger than the first, I asked the last guy why he walked and looked backwards. He told me that," In order to go forward, you must first know your past mistakes, and not let them happen again." So then I asked them together,"Why are you travelling together?" They answered saying," Since each of use only look one way, we must use what the other knows in order to live. One of us cannot live without the other two." Hearing this, I left swearing never to be so singleminded as to let myself become that dependant on others for my well being. circa 1995 |
