Greetings!
Ghost and spirits. . . now there is something that I actually have a decent amount of experience with. Before I go any farther, I would like to make it perfectly clear that all of my ideas, theories, etc. are based strictly on my own experiences and research. If you have a different opinion, then please let me know. I'd be very interested in hearing about anyone else's views and ideas or experiences.
I have found that ghosts, poltergeists, spirits, haunts, etc. can actually be very different things. Sometimes it has simply been a matter of emotional residue left over from a particularly tragic event. That is what the stories in the article concerning the horses remind me of. These residues left an imprint that can last for many years and this goes for human "ghosts" as well.
Sometimes, there is so much emotional residue that it kinda overloads, especially in certain places where there has been a constant build up of negative emotions. (ex.: dungeons, prisons) When the "overload" occurs, the emtions take on a mind of their own, so to speak, and become real. For instance, there are tales of a castle in England where a monster haunts the place. Descriptions have been varied but they always seem to be a patchwork, pieced together look to the monster. All the emotions seem to have come together to form a being on its own. Very primitive, emotionally instinctive. If the hatred/anger is dominate, then the being will lash out. After the overload, these lashing outs can take on physical properties. I have witnessed people being attacked by what I believe to be this kind of phenomenon. The resulting 'creatures' are very malevolent and sometimes dangerous.
Then there are the spirits; those that still think, feel, and communicate. This is where a lot of animal ghost stories and loved one stories come into play. I disagree with the article about the intelligence of certain animals. It has been my pleasure to be able to work with and handle a large variety of my animal brethren; from big cats to domestic cats, wolves, dogs, various rodent breeds, snakes, etc. All animals are intelligent in their own way. But the key to spirits coming back seems to be the emotional ties that the animal or person had, and who ever heard of a mosquito having an emotional tie with someone? Which means that certain animals either do not, or can not form emotional bonds. But that is for another discussion. ;)
In the cases where people have felt their lost pet nudging their hand, whining, paw prints on the bed covers, etc., I believe these to be the spirits of our beloved fur-kids. They love and need us as much as we love them and need them. I have seen people and animals do some amazing things simply because they were worried about a loved one. Do you really believe that death would stop them from being with you if they thought you needed them? I don't. But then, I have woken up at night and looked around my bedroom trying to figure out where the loud purring was coming from and then seen several little cat forms curled up on my bed, the bookshelves, the dresser, and any where else they could perch. I don't think I have ever felt so secure as I did then.
Anyway, I think I've written enough for one night. I need to head to bed. If anyone has questions let me know. And I can't wait to see what everyone else thinks.
