On
March 13,
1997, one of the most massively witnessed
UFO sightings occured over the skies of
Arizona and
Nevada. The sightings, which were witnessed by thousands of people, took place between the hours of 7:30 and 10:30PM. In the three hours, the strange lights covered a space of about 300 miles, from the
Nevada line, through
Phoenix, to the edge of
Tucson. These events are also refered to as "The Lights Over Phoenix"
Initial Reports
At approximately 6:55 PM PST (7:55 PM MST) in the city of Henderson, Nevada, a young man reported witnessing a "V"-shaped object overhead. It was described as having 6 lights on its leading edge, as well as being about the "size of a (Boeing) 747"[1] . The lights were apparently coming from the northwest. As it passed overhead towards the southeast, it made a sound that the young man compared to that of "rushing wind"[2]
A former police officer from Paulden, Arizona was the next person to report a sighting. He had just left his house at approximately 8:15 PM MST. He was driving north when he happened to look out his window. That's when he saw a cluster of reddish or orange lights in the sky. The formation consisted of four lights together, along with a fifth light trailing them. After seeing this, the witness returned to his home and got a pair of binoculars and watched the lights until they disappeared over the horizon to the south.
Prescott and Prescott Valley
The objects were next seen in the areas of Prescott and Prescott Valley. They had traveled 30 miles to the south in a little over a minute. At approximately 8:17 PM MST, callers began reporting seeing 4 or 5 bright white lights passing overhead. What they saw seemed to be a triangular-shaped object with a grouping of lights along the sides. It appeared to be a single craft made up five objects, each equal in size to a 747, flying in a perfectly locked formation and moving silently through the sky. The reports from Prescott Valley cast doubt on speculations that the lights were several planes flying in formation or flares fired by the Air Force. Prescott Valley witnesses noted that the object passed directly overhead and that the object was definitely solid because it blocked out much of the starry sky as it passed over.
The National UFO Reporting Center received the following report:
(He was) standing outside with his wife and sons in Prescott Valley, when they noticed a cluster of lights to in the west-northwest of their position. The lights formed a triangular pattern, but all of them appeared to be red, with the exception of the light at the nose of the object, which was distinctly white. The object, or objects, which had been observed for approximately 2-3 minutes with binoculars, then passed directly overhead the observers, they were seen to "bank to the right," and they then disappeared in the night sky to the southeast of Prescott Valley.
Dewey
Ten miles south of Prescott is the town of Dewey. It was here that six people, five adults and a youth, driving northbound on Highway 69 towards Prescott saw the large cluster of lights. The people pulled their car into the parking lot of a grocery store in order to get a better look at the lights. By the time they got out of their car, they were directly underneath the lights. The lights appeared to hover for several minutes. The caller, who was an experienced flyer, said that the object was so large that he could clench his fist and hold it at arm's length and still not completly cover the light. He estimated the object to be not over 1,000 feet above the ground and that it was moving at a considerably slower pace than an aircraft would fly.
