Hey, y'all. Well, the split-brain stuff ended up not being good essay material, so I'm doing a more language-oriented one, instead. If anyone's interested, I am going to attach a Word document version of my outline for the essay (as it is so far)...am planning on submitting it on Friday...any comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Sasquatch |

This looks really good Sasquatch, I'd be interested in reading the essay as well if you're interested in sharing it. Having read your outline has prompted me to ask if you have any links or (library) recommendations regarding communications for non-verbal or non-gesture approaches. Recently I have been working with an individual who is non-verbal and has limited muscle control so there is no signing involved. We have been using a device called a DynaVox, while it is limited and sometimes slow going it is still a remarkable piece of equipment. Our alternative is the PECS (picture exchange communication system) ... again handy but still frustrating to my student. As you well know, humans are born to communicate .... we have feelings, opinions, preferences ... all the things that make us unique individuals. I really bothers me to see those who can not communicate fluidly being relegated to a lesser place in a social/academic standing. I watch my students and see them listening to what is around them, but the only chance some of them get to 'talk' is when someone thinks to give them the tools to do so... and even then its a brief moment guided by intent of the Aide who usually wants to know something, then the tools are put aside (out of the way) once he or she gets what is wanted. I have also observed the frustration on both sides... of those who want to communicate but can not and those that are used to 'normal' modes of communication. My most recent charge seemed surprised when I made a point of having either the PECS or Vox at hand always, and would ask her questions pertinent to herself ... thus encouraging her to 'talk' Anyways, I am always on the lookout for new (to me) methods of communication and am wondering if you have anything at your disposal for sharing? <sigh> think how much easier or convinent telepathy would be, lol no wonder its held its own on humanity's wish list and folklore :o) Blessings, Red |

Red, I don't know of anything off the top of my head, but have sent an email 'round the department here to see if anyone else does. I will no doubt post the essay here when it is finished, or close to submittal time, as well. :o) Cheers, Sasquatch |
