This is the fragmentary dialog of Plato which contains the only known ancient account of Atlantis. If you have only read out-of-context excerpts, you should read this short document in its entirety and make up your own mind whether Plato meant the tale literally or as part of an allegory about an ideal society (as Critias implies early on in the dialog, refer to: "All that is said by any of us can only be imitation and representation."). CRITIAS by Plato [360 BC] translated by Benjamin Jowett |

Or is it? If interested in Atlantis, then go to the recommended books section and get the book I recommended on Atlantis by Ignatius Donnelly, it's very good, and it is the origional, not a retelling based on someone elses book. There you can learn the context of Plato's story, who he told it too, why he told it and where he heard it.... "Way down, below the ocean, where I want to be, she made me"....Donavan |

I think fact. I think that there are many lost empires and civilizations. Archaeological evidence for this abounds. I believe that Atlantis is but one of the many. Lemuria as well. |

Imbas, I had to dig out my Donovan songbook.... (one of my absolute favs of his) ATLANTIS Donovan
The continent of Atlantis was an island which lay before the great flood in the area we now call the Atlantic Ocean. So great an area of land, that from her western shores those beautiful sailors journeyed to the South and the North Americas with ease, in their ships with painted sails.
To the East Africa was a neighbour, across a short strait of sea miles. The great Egyptian age is but a remnant of The Atlantian culture. The antediluvian kings colonised the world All the Gods who play in the mythological dramas In all legends from all lands were from fair Atlantis. Knowing her fate, Atlantis sent out ships to all corners of the Earth. On board were the Twelve: The poet, the physician, the farmer, the scientist, The magician and the other so-called Gods of our legends. Though Gods they were - And as the elders of our time choose to remain blind Let us rejoice and let us sing and dance and ring in the new Hail Atlantis! Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be, Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be, Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be. Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be, Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be. My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah, I wanna see you some day My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah, My antediluvian baby, My antediluvian baby, I love you, girl, Girl, I wanna see you some day. My antediluvian baby, oh yeah I wanna see you some day, oh My antediluvian baby. My antediluvian baby, I wanna see you My antediluvian baby, gotta tell me where she gone I wanna see you some day Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, oh yeah Oh glub glub, down down, yeah
Fact or fiction? Not a proven fact (yet) but a fact I absolutely believe. A past incarnation (my second one on the little blue planet, 3rd from the sun) was on Atlantis. I don't have conscious memories of it, per se, but so very many dreams and over so many years | | |

I think fact as well. Though some may go with the universal consciousness theory, I think there are too many ancient civilizations that are too far apart with too many similar traits for there not to have been a common source. The old India(n) documents which describe ancient flying machines also point to advanced civilizations hidden in the mists of time. My only nagging doubt is the lack of man made evidence. Tomorrows people will find much evidence that we were here, things that simply do not break down without traces, plastics, certain metals, etc. It is curious to me that ancient civilizations, could develop without the same trace evidence. Even if they blew, or were blown apart. All natural building materials would seem to indicate more primative societies. But, besides that, I'd like to believe in Atlantis as a real place, or remembered history.... I wonder if, in the worlds early formation, there may have been less dimensional barriers, which lead to stories like Atlantis. Another possible explanation, is, like the Superman comicbook stories, Atlantis was another planet, which when it discovered it's impending doom, sent out it's people to new colonies, planets, and the legend of Atlantis is but a trace of our long past history.... |

Imo the the Atlantis story relates to the civilizations in the pre-Columbian Americas. There is significant evidence to suggest that Europeans, Middle Easterners, and North Africans were making regular voyages to these areas and were trading with the local peoples and may well have been creating colonies in the 'New World' as well. Some of the evidence includes tobacco and coca traces found in Egyptian mummies. There are also Egyptian, Libyan, Punic, and Celtic petro-glyphs and linguistic evidences that are coming to light..... -BB, Badger |
