Perhaps the evolution of higher states of cognition and more complex consciousness prompted the "fall from grace".  Perhaps it is the evolution of distinct identity and free will which puts us in that place, where non-human animals can be held more or less blameless and innocent as children since they have just about as much voluntary control over their actions.

 

Then again, maybe not, recent research has shown that we actually know very little about the the consciousness and potential Theory of Mind of non-human animals...how do we know that we are the only ones to have fallen from grace?
