Gyromancy From the Greek guros ('circle'), and manteia ('divination'). Said to be a method of divination in which the diviner walks around a circle of letters until he or she is too dizzy to continue; the letters against which he stumbles or the direction of the fall are supposed to spell out a prophetic message. The circling motion is said to induce a kind of delirium while triggering an altered state of consciousness, which in turn removes the direct interference or influence of Will, reducing the selected letters to chance or divine direction. Another form of gyromancy is where the person walks around in a circle until the individual collapses. The position that the person falls in relation to the circle determines the outcome of future events. |
