Over the last year I have been studying labyrinths, both their potential and power. They are remarkable things... and I have discovered that children really seem to 'click' with them. I took my daughter out to the one we have nearby, I had just finished making a table-top labyrinth and wanted to get the 'feel' of the big one... so off we went. Now up to this point she had been running her finger through my small labyrinth every time she looked at it, which was frequent. She showed it to her friends, however.. I over heard her telling one that if he 'fell out of it' he was 'bombed' meaning 'game over'... sooo who knows how she views this tool. Oddly enough she is left handed but uses the labyrinth right-handed... which makes me wonder... since the property of all labyrinths is to unlock the left brain.
Anyways... once we got to the large 7 circuit labyrinth she looked it over and cautiously circled the whole thing. Our friend had gone in first and kidlet watched her circle slowly back and forth meditatively, without comment. However, the longer she watched the more kinetic she became... finally she circled back around to the entrance and looked at me, asking if she could go in. As soon as I gave her the nod she hit the entrance running... going from stand-still to speed as only children can, lol. She took the turns at skittering stops going to race around the next curve slowing to a decent pace only when passing our friend who was on the way out... the whole time grinning like a fiend. When she reached the center, she threw her arms high, stretching skyward then plopped down in the center. Watching her I'm not sure what she experienced... was she going inward? experiencing something? or simply doing as she had seen others do at the heart of the labyrinth? Who's to say, but her... and I forgot to ask, lol. Her stillness lasted no more then a minute, then she was back on her feet and racing the labyrinth on her way out, arms spread...this time when she hit the entrance she kept on going straight out across the field! All I could do was grin and shake my head as she then ran and rolled through the field. What an energy rush she must have had coming through that labyrinth! I think I may ask her about it the next time I see her fingers running my small one.... and sometimes 'run' it she does... moving within the curving walls as fast as her finger can go without 'falling out' as she puts it. Who knows... it wouldn't be the first time I have accepted lesson or insight from a child.
