I read something in the Spectator on Saturday. It was a letter to the editor that made me think a bit. For those who don't get the paper, here's a copy of what was said:
"Cootes Paradise and the RBG must be a provincial park.
I believe it is high time that all the Cootes Paradise and the RBG lands at the head of Lake Ontario be designated a provincial park. It is the prettiest head of all the Great Lakes and it is the only one in Canada. All the other heads of the Great Lakes are in the United States or shared with them.
Bronte Creek Provincial Park is the only provincial park in this vincinity and it isn't even on Lake Ontario. It is not enough for this hugely populated area, which is forecast to grow immensely in 20 to 30 years. It is definitely now time to add some provincial park estate to the Southern Ontario mix.
It is not acceptable that any of these lands be lost to any other development that takes any of it away from the public because we couldn't get our act together to protect this gorgeous piece of Ontario, which includes a portion of the Niagara Escarpment and the famous Bruce Trail and numerous waterfalls as well as Cootes Paradise.
If you take any 10 kilometer stretch of Highways 401 and 403 from Montreal to Windsor, the section from Aldershot to Ancaster, which has Cootes in the centre, is the prettiest section hands down. It's not called "paradise" for nothing. Way back in the 18th century, they knew what they were talking about. Are we, the people of the early 21st century, going to let that disappear piece by piece and seen as fools by the rest of history?"
Roger Stermann, Hamilton Hamilton Spectator Letter to the Editor June 25, 2005
And on the heels of that Andrew Dreschel's column in the Spec today gave an update to what has been done (and not done) with the RBG. The current administration has apparently done everything to keep finances in check but the various governments have not done anything except make promises.
This made a lot of sense but unfortunately I don't think it will ever get done because politicians rarely ever do anything that requires common sense. What do you guys think?

This is a huge concern of mine with the unchecked and at times unlawful development (and/or destruction) of our natural resources and precious eco-systems. Giving this stretch of land government protection is the very best thing this morally corrupt municipality could EVER do for itself (short of replanting the valley) and its future citizens. Please keep me updated on this, Trelew. Many if not most of our members are environmentally aware and active, globally. The protection of even this small greenspace is a victory for us all. |
