On Tuesday, my grandmother (my mom's mom) fell and broke her hip. My parents and aunt went down to her house that afternoon. On Wednesday, the doctors decided to do surgery and that they would put pins in it to hold everything together.

She made it through the surgery just fine, but while in recovery she went into cardiac arrest. My parents and aunt were on their way home when my uncle called them and told them. They made the decision not to go to any extreme measures to save her. She was revived, but never really regained consciousness. My dad called me several times through the evening to keep me up to date and said that he didn't think she would make it through the night. My mom called about 11pm last night to tell me that she had passed away.

I'm in complete shock. I never expected this in a billion years. The break wasn't that bad and she made it through the surgery fine. It was just a lot of little things. I genuinely believe that she never got over my grandfather's death 15 years ago. They are together now. She was my last grandparent.

My grandmother had a little dog that dh and I had orginally decided to watch while she was in the hospital. Well, we decided to go ahead and take her dog. He's such a sweet little thing that I think he needs us. My mom was so upset last night and she kept repeating that she didn't know what would happen to him. I insisted that we will take him. We have been talking about getting a second dog for a while. Of course dh wanted a lab and shih tzu is a little smaller than that! I'm not sure quite what's going to happen with our dog and two cats, but right now this is a good choice.

I talked to my mom this morning and they are meeting the funeral director tomorrow afternoon. Right now it appears that the memorial will either be Monday afternoon or Tuesday.

Sorry to throw all this out. I just wanted everyone to know why I haven't been around much and that I probably won't be around for a few more days. I have been popping in and reading, but I just don't feel much up to posting.

I hope she is at peace.
Amy

Amy ... I am here for you in whatever capacity I can be ((hugs))

Never is grief or the passing of a loved one easy, but know that you have friends that would ease the sorrow from your heart and comfort you in this difficult time. Its my sincerest wish that you find peace and comfort in the fondest of memories you have and know solace in the arms of your friends and family.

May she rest in peace

I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.

With my condolences,

My mom fell in a restuarant a few months back and a bone fragment is pinching a nerve in her shoulder and is affecting her ability to drive a truck, she's a truck driver. She is due for surgery soon to fix the problem and I and everyone else haven't been showing much concern since its a minor surgery. I guess its best not to take anything for granted, I think I'll give her a call. Sorry to hear about the loss of your grandmother. Grandmothers and mothers are often keystones for many families and their loss can often be hard on families. If anything happened to my mom, many of my relatives would likely loose touch with one another, possibly for good. Whenever my mom is feeling like no one cares for her as much as they should I always point this fact out to her, to let her know she is important to everyone.

Sudden and unexpected deaths are the hardest to deal with.  It can be devastating.  You and your other are probably in a bit of a state of shock.  All sorts of strange things are running through your heads.

It takes about 2 years to recover.  In the meantime, try not to obsess over little things, such as the dog.  Things like that will work out.

And, don't make any major decisions or changes for about the next two years.

I'm suggesting a way to deal with the life-part of it, ya gotta go on.

The same sorta thing happened to a close friend of mine.  She had a brain tumor, came out of the surgery okay.  And -- boom .....  I felt so sorry for her husband, and family.  Such a SCHOCK!  Which makes it so much harder.

I was lucky to have a psychologist friend whose research and  counseling was 'Loss Grief Syndrome'.  It did help.  There are lots of books out there that can help.

In my personal belief, 'when your number's up -- it's up.'

Brightest Blessings and thoughts to soothe you.

My Dear Amy,

It was with much sadness and dismay I read the news tonight of your grandmother's passing.  To be parted from someone you love by death is a heart break but more so when it comes so unexpectedly.  I am so very sorry for you and the members of your family.

You do indeed have friends here, Amy, and if you need to talk about you will be met with love, support and empathy.

Peace, strength, sympathy and love to you,

Leila

Thank you so much everyone for your well wishes and thoughts. I'm actually somewhat okay today. I know that will probably change next week during the memorial, but for right now I'm going with it. For some reason, I just have this knowledge that this happened the way it was supposed to and that it's okay. She is at peace. More than feeling sad, I feel this immense peace when I think of her.

This morning when I was driving to work, I looked in my rearview mirror and saw this old couple that looked almost exactly like my grandparents in a truck like they used to drive. It was so weird. I glanced back a few times to see them. When I turned the corner, the truck and just disapeared. I didn't see it anywhere, only the usual morning traffic around me. Very unusual, but somehow comforting.

We got the dog last night. He is very cute, my grandmother had his hair trimmed short for the summer. He's mostly white with black splotches and black ears. He has the funniest underbite and when he looks at you and grins with his little bottom teeth sticking out and his big brown eyes you could hand over your shorts! He took to dh almost immediately and they have become very good buddies. It's funny because dh was adamant that we were NOT keeping this dog, it's only temporary and now look at them. They are so cute! Our other animals (we have 2 cats and a dog) aren't thrilled, but they are okay.

Thank you all so very much for your support, it means so much to me.
Amy

A few days after my father died, I saw him walking across the pasture one evening when I went to feed the horses.  Other people say similar things.  Maybe you did see her (them).

I'm glad to hear the dog is working out well. lol
