Principals of Ritual Construction
When writing a ritual you must answer many questions
- who- who is it for, who do you need to call upon
- why- why are you doing it
- what- what kind of ritual is it
- when- when is best to do it?
-how- how will you do it
4 main steps
- create a sacred space
- invite those involved
- do working
- close sacred space
as per ethics class, before any working divination should be done to see if you should perform ritual
begin preperation with a purification- ritual bath with relevant herbs or any of the standard herbs - contemplate your purpose during the bath. when you get out of the bath, perform self blessing
the altar should be set up specific to your purpose. light the charcoal first, to allow it to heat up. then light the handmaidens' candle. then light the source (center) candle. the handmaiden may light element candles with her candle, though the fire candle should be lit seperately. the source candle lights the other altar candles.
summoners charge... may be standard or specific to ritual
the priest/priestess is annointed with oil by the handmaiden, a symbol on the forehead depicting rank, or a simple cross, x or dot
create a sacred space. the circle is cast with a sword or wand, casters choice
circle is swept reciting besom chant
purifications - invitation of the elements. invite the character of the element you need, when inviting fire, ask for a soothing warmth for healing rather than a raging inferno!
the priestess then goes to the northeast and nails down the circle
Invite the Lord and Lady- tell them why you need them- their invitation should be 2 to 3 times longer than the invitation to the elements. the Lady is always invited last! Keep the God and Goddess in the same pantheon. if unsure who to ask for, ask for goddess of creativity, healing, etc.
Give a small preamble... a short description of what the working is to be (meditation, drumming, singing etc)
Blessing of the wine is next, as a symbol of the great rite (union of man and woman)
Cake blessing if using
carry out the main body of the ritual, directing energy where needed
say farewell to the Lord and Lady, thanking them
say farewell to the quarters, thanking them
drop the circle
pour libation outside giving thanks to the earth
