Making your own runes. Runes are traditionally made from wood and bone. However, today rune sets run the ganlet of variety with a more non -traditional approach...ceramic, glass, oak, shells, stone, and yes even plastic runes are to be found out there. I have 3 sets ... a deck of rune cards, rune dice, and my handmade rune-wands. These I made a couple years ago following a 'traditional' approach of fasting, meditating and crafting over a period of 9 days (3 runes a day then a day of consecration). I chose oak, although if I had known how hard it is to carve I might have choosen a softer wood from a fruitbearing tree, however it was oak that called to me. For those that can not harvest their own wood you can get dowels and buttons from woodshops and hardware stores and oak dice (blank) at any craft store. -
Carefully smudged each stave and set it a aside before carving. -
A short prayer to the powers that be to not only guide heart & hand but to bless the tools created. - Then look at the 24 blank or empty sticks and choose one that catches the eye.
- Meditate on the rune before putting blade to the wood, then when ready the rune was carved. Please note that ALL runes are carved top to bottom and in each line is a single smooth stroke. (I used a blade, but many people perfer using a wood burning tool)
- Once the rune is carved, say its name, give it the sense of power that your own energy implanted in it during creation.
- Staining your runes is recommended, especially for staves since it is not as easy to see the rune as it is with the smaller disks. I have used blood to stain my runes, but for those a bit more squeamish or concerned about health issues I recommend some iron ochre.
