Maybe this has been asked before but I'll have to ask it again since I'm new. What things shouldn't you give your birds to eat? Any plants or food that you shouldn't put in the cages?

Ask anything you want. We realize that new people cannot possibly find all the old comments on any subject.

No avocado, caffeine, salt (no high sodium food), no peach, plum or apple pits.

I've gone blank. Someone else will be along to answer this.
Annie

Also milk and fats. Becky, when you have the time, explore some of the articles on the left sidebar. There is a wealth of information there on the care of our birds. Near the bottom, there is a link called "Bird Care Articles and Links". If you click on that a long list of articles and link pages opens. On the Bird Article Links page, there is a link to an article by David Poole, titled "Inappropriate Nutrition in Parrots". It contains all sorts of information. Here is a quick link to the article:
As Annie says, please ask away! It is a good refresher for all of us, and really good for anyone who is new to birds.

I go along with all the other comments... anytime you have a question please ask...
There is so much information on the side bar and even after reading all of it, we still sometimes want that little bit extra reassurance.
That's why we're here....

No Chocolate either. Of course alcohol is a big no-no as well.
Please look over the toxic plant list.. While most greens are good for birds (like kale, turnip, mustard, etc... even dandelion), many plants will make them ill or can kill them. Tomato or  Rhubarb leaves and many others as well.
White potatoes are good, but be careful that they are not still green.

i gotta disagree on apple seeds after working on apple farms and seeing native birds destroy most of the crop just to get the seeds i think its safe to say a few in apple that you give a pet bird isn't going to kill them

Here's info about the apple seeds and why we should not allow our birds to eat them.  Also..remember that wild birds who do eat them....also eat other things to counteract the effects from the seed.  That's something the birds we keep cannot do themselves.

The following article is used with the written permission of the author, Gillian Willis, pharmacist and toxicologist.

          Apple Seeds

Apple belongs to the Malus species. Apple SEEDS contain cyanogenic glycosides which release cyanide when ingested. It is not necessary to core apples before giving them to your birds. The small amount of cyanide that would be released from ingesting a few seeds is very unlikely to cause cyanide toxicity in birds. If they were to ingest a large number, cyanide poisoning could occur. My birds love apple seeds and get one or two daily as a treat.

All other parts of the apple including the wood, is nontoxic. Apple branches are safe to use as natural wood perches.

All parts of plants/trees belonging to the Prunus species, with the EXCEPTION of the fruit itself, contain cyanogenic glycosides. This includes apricot, peach, nectarine, plum and cherry. The kernels inside these fruits should not be fed to birds, nor the wood used for perches.

Geeze.....I forgot to say my part!  It does say one or two daily won't hurt them.....but you know what....I'm just not going to take the chance.   I'm of a feeling that if more than that can hurt them or kills them....then one or two might make them ill....so I'll just give'm the apple part and try to grow the seeds.
I think there's a link on the side bar to check out also on foods....what's good...what's not so good and the downright bad.  If you have some time on your hands and want to go through the stuff on the sidebar there, you'll find LOTS of great and interesting info.
