I want a Yellow nape but you just need to reasearch the two and see which one works for you. Noone here can tell you what kind of bird to get, they can make suggestions, you just have to do alot of research on what would work for you.

I agree with Pwac. I have had several kinds. DYH, blue front, and lilac crowned. DYHs talked best for me, but my little Lilac, Julie, was a love. She didn't talk at all but was the sweetest bird.
No one can promise you any bird will talk, but your best chance for a talker is a Yellow nape, then DYH, then Bluefront. That's just my own opinion.
My DYHs all were chatterboxes but the bluefront said only a few things. Maybe he couldn't get a word in because of the DYHs.
We have members who have each species and each will say theirs is best.
Good luck. Come tell us what you get and let us see pics.
Annie

I have two Double yellow heads, one yellow nape, one blue front and a red lored. Folks on here are right, you never know if you will get a talker or not. My nape and DYH's are gabbers, but a friend of mine has a blue front that won't shut up, and I've heard a orange wing that was a chatterbox too.
You have to talk to your bird of choice everyday. When you give him a treat say want some apple? grape?  etc etc. Just talk to the bird like you would a child. I explain everything to my birds just like a child.
Good luck in your search but remember your parrot is special even if he never talks. Nan

I would suggest that you do considerable research and study before buying any Amazon.  They're not for everyone.  If you've heard about the Hot Three, you'll understand what I mean.

Howdy!
I am fairly new here but thought I would throw in my 2 cents :). I have a DYH and an OW. Stanley my DYH is 7 years old, soon to be 8. He is a dna'd male. I will tell you he has never bitten me hard even during his hormonal struts, talks better than my CAG which has a 240 word/phrase vocab., is very balanced in temperament and easy to read. He is extremely affectionate and loves everyone in the house even visitors. His words and phrases are used at "appropriate" times so you can't tell me it's just mimickery. He handles new situations very well, is extremely acrobatic and clownish, loves his toys and loves to eat. I think he is the perfect bird! My OW, Tequila on the other hand, is not a great talker all though she is still learning from Stanley. She is 10 and has bitten me hard even though I am her "person". She is moody and she screeches just for fun...Stanley is very quiet except for dusk. She is sneaky and unpredictable, does not tolerate other family members well, she does not necessarily enjoy toys and is not animated or acrobatic like Stanley. I also have Stella a B&G. She and Stanley tolerate each other pretty well...they both can share the playnet or a large tree stand without issues. However, the OW and the CAG can not share with anyone any space. Stanley came from a Bird store in Las Vegas where the owner of the shop is also the breeder. Robin hand raised him and socialized him to be a sweetie and I think that is of the utmost importance! I got him just weaned and he actually picked me while I was visiting the store. Every bird I have except the OW picked me. I think getting to interact with a bird a few times is really the key to any bird before you buy but I have nothing but praises for my DYH and would highly suggest one for the right person. That being said I will tell you that Stanley takes a GREAT deal of work. Go to : http://zachary.avianavenue.com/frames.html

this site will teach you everything an amzon needs. I would read it well before comitting to one :)

Amazons are known for talking...but a nape might prove more stable than a DYH. I know a very hormonal (especially now-spring) aggressive female DYH. She is well bonded to her owner, but dislikes all women. All birds are different, maybe if you properly socialize a new parrot DYH or other you wont have an over bonded territorial brat? LOL It is all in the raising, socializing and positive reinforcment. As for talking? easy to train, but not all will do it.Research and study, read stories (so many on the internet) then decide, but remember it is a life-long comitment.

Yes - the hot three!  Consisting of the Double yellow head, the blue fronted and the yellow nape.  They are the three most noted for unpredictable or aggressive behavior.  Of course there are exceptions to every rule, but I have known far more agrressive BFs, YNs and DYHs than orange wings, lilac crowned or red heads.  The catch to that is, the best known talkers are the "hot three".
So....if it were me I'd go with the sweetest bird (no matter what kind it is) rather than the best potential for being a good talker - cause there are no guarantees on that!
By the way - I have a DYH that is an awesome bird - very sweet (to me) - and so silly.....but - not an impressive talker - just says a few words.  Good luck in your search!

I have the hot 3 of the amazons lol Although 2 are female. I have also discovered that during the "dreaded hormone" season 2 of my females are absolute pills, and my 2 males ( both DYH). However I have never bred  birds so I don't know how they would react in a breeding situation. Both of my boys are over 16 years or so I don't know if that is a factor either..

These are amazing birds but not for everyone, so do your research!
Nan

I'm with Nan when she said Amazons aren't for everyone.... I used to breed them and I found the best talkers were the Mealy's (biggest of the species) and those were breeders who despised humans when it was raging hormones.... and could repeat conversations overheard that certainly wasn't directed to them... that's how smart the Zon's  can be.

They are independant, can be content to be alone on a perch, kicking back watching TV or just plain laid back. They are not a needy bird, are independant, and the greatest love they have is food.

I had one DYH who when I was trying to figure out which room to put him in as he was so dang cranky due to hormones, I casually mentioned to my son "how about the danged closet" and the bird replied "well that's a thought"

Etta has such cool birds and a neat way to tell us about them.  I know he didn't end up in the closet....but his remark just killed me.

I've had Blue Fronts and DYH's and a YN.  For me the best was the BlueFront and he was the clowniest too.  But....I can't say anything bad about the DYH's either.  Geeze...just love zons...lol and their neat "smell".
