i just got my tiel 1 week ago yesterday. he's just 3 months old. yes he has all the markings of a male. the owners of his parents made sure i got a male. after talking to him and putting my arm in his cage all week, he finally started sitting on it. i would love to pet him and hold him but i don't want him flying off on me either. i named him Fred and he's a sweety. how long will it take for him to be able to sit on my shoulder ? I feel like I've met up with you before Betty Lou.... I must know you from somewhere It's going to take some time for Fred to feel safe and secure and he's doing well in the week you've had him since he has adjusted to sitting on your arm already ...he might even surprise you where he runs up the arm and there's the shoulder!! only until he see's you as a friend and companion I doubt if he'd stay there... so time is what it will take.... i've posted on the new members board and i've posted in general. i just wanted to make sure i'm doing the right thing and it seems to take forever, but then he's still a baby and we have a long time to get used to and know each other. Betty Lou |

Actually, Betty, if you post enquiries about your tiel in the "Tiels N Conures" board, then folks who have them and want to know similar info can find it more easily. In fact, you might find some interesting reading for yourself in there! There's all kinds of information along the left sidebar, including a bunch of articles about birds under Bird Care Articles and Links. Should keep you busy for a very long time! lol Abby |

Have you gotten his wings clipped yet? This will keep him from flying away from you and crashing into a mirror or window. The person woh you got the bird from or your Avian Vet will be able to show you how to clip his wings correctly. |

In my opinion, a wing clip, done by a professional, is a huge help in the taming, training, bonding, and socializing process. You might try reading the little book Guide to a Well Behaved Parrot by Mattie Sue Athan for great suggestions on all aspects of being a companion to a bird. And remember that it takes time, patience, and love to earn the trust and affection of a bird. |
