AUTO COMPLETE CAN BE DANGEROUS
I received e-mail from Sue in Columbia Falls MT (brrrrrrr), who had
received a warning from Panda Software. The warning concerned Auto
Complete in Internet Explorer. This feature saves passwords and other
sensitive data. It uses the data to fill out forms, so you don't have
to type everything in. Panda warned that passwords or other data could
be stolen. Sue wanted more information.
So, here's the deal, Sue: The warning is really just common sense.
If you use a public computer, such as in a library or school computer
lab, you don't want the computer to save your password or credit card
number. Someone else might access it. Same goes for a home or work
computer that is shared. The answer? Disable Auto Complete before you
enter sensitive information. In Internet Explorer, click
Tools>>Internet Options>>Content>>Auto Complete. Under "Use
AutoComplete for," clear all the boxes. If you entered data and failed
to clear the boxes first, go to the same window. Under "Clear
AutoComplete history," click both buttons. That will erase any data
you entered. And thanks for writing!
