Hi Jen.

I have been in exgerating (sp?)pain in my right hip for two weeks, I figured it had to do with the fall I had, however the pain had gotten got worse.  I have been taking my pain meds both the Lortabs and Ultrams; sometimes it's not enough, especially at this time.

The pain is so bad to where it wakes me up in the middle of the night...then when I get out of bed I am in the worse pain ever walking.

I looked up infomation about arthritis in the hip, it mentioned Osteoarthritis, it seems to me this is what I have, but only on my back since I suffer from scolsis.  My family doctor did say I have arthritis in my back.  I also have a pinched too.  I discovered this when I was seeing a chiraprator, this was in 2005.

So, here is what I came across from Mayo Clinic website.

The article says:  Osteoarthritis is the most common type of hip arthritis. Also called wear-and-tear arthritis or degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis is characterized by progressive wearing away of the cartilage of the joint. As the protective cartilage is worn away by hip arthritis, bare bone is exposed within the joint.
The most common symptoms of hip arthritis are:
I have all these symptoms

*Pain with activities
*Limited range of motion
*Stiffness of the hip
*Walking with a limp

Physical Therapy:

Aquatic exercise is an excellent option for patients who have difficulty exercising.

I wrote:  The aquatic exercises are great for my back, I am sure the spa exercises will be great for my hip. When I was in PT I did the jet, I did it for about 15 - 20 minutes, a few minutes on my spine then rotated positions by moving to my left, and adjusted the jet to where it would be aiming the ai of my hip, then to my right.

Now, I realized if I did the jet too long I would be hurting later that day, so I limit my time using the jet.  The jet is so soothing I could stay in the pool all day long...lol

Physical therapy is limited, I went there for three months, however, my family doctor would be more than happier to write me a script to go back to PT.  I see my doctor on December 3rd., I'm going to mention it to him about, and I'll start therapy right away.

Article says:  Joint Supplements (Glucosamine)
Glucosamine appears to be safe and might be effective for treatment of osteoarthritis, but research into these supplements has been limited.

I have heard this name of vitamin/supplement, I am going to look into it, but not until I consult with my doctor.

I know hip surgery wouldn't do me any good since I have scolosis, and paralysis. It would do more damage than good.

Anyway, what do you think, maybe you have some suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

-Andrea

Jen,

I ran into a website about Degeneration Joint Disease, it sure sounds as if I do have this disease it fits all my criteria.

This type of arthritis is called osteoarthritis, OA, DJD, or osteoarthrosis.  Other forms of arthritis (rheumatoid, post-traumatic, and other inflammatory disorders) frequently may have OA as the end-stage, making differentiation difficult.  « »  ??§Question  ««What do they mean by "post-traumatic", are they referring to an injury?»»

§The second form involves the spine (neck and mid- and low-back regions).

»»The area I experience pain is the lower, upper shoulder blades, center of my back region, and neck.  All the pain is on my left side of my body, due from the weight I carry, since I have no use with my right side of my body.

The pain in my hip is constant.  I have had a hard time balancing, however, I have always had a hard time balancing since the stroke, but it's got worse.

I read in the last paragraph, it says: The symptoms of OA may become quite severe. It involves both sides of the body.  Pain in the joint may remain constant or may wax and wane for a period of years. »» Comment:  I have to wonder, how and what brought this  pain on all of a sudden, when I have never experienced this constant pain before?»»

I feel unsteady, stiff, and as if it is giving out on me when weight is placed on it.  I also have a hard time bending over.  As I start to bend over to pick something up my back locks up it's painful.

If I do have this disease I pray it will leave me even more disabled than I'm already I want to be able to live a somewhat normal life.

Thanks again for reading this.  I'm not sure if you have any suggestions if not maybe this information would help them.

Andrea,
I'm no Jen, but I'll try to pitch in here if I can.  I know Jen is swamped right now planning her wedding.  She only has a few days left and I doubt she's got much time to be around here much right now.

I think it is highly unlikely that your pain is from osteoarthritis of an onset from your recent fall.  Osteoarthritis is a condition that occurs over an extended period of time.  It sounds to me more like you're still having pain from a contusion sustained in your fall.   I know that the description you typed from the internet sounds exactly like what you have, but you really can't take everything you read on the internet to heart.   Although, I'm sure you probably do have some osteoarthritis in your hip.  I'm sure I do to, it's a natural occurrence of aging.  It happens to all of us.  The difference between what causes us pain is the degree of severity.  I'm sure you could probably find several other articles that describe other conditions that would also describe what you are feeling and would sound like what you're suffering from, but that doesn't mean you have those either.  Be careful about self-diagnosing is all I'm trying to say.   I'm just thinking that your continuing pain is probably from deep bruise you likely suffered in your fall.  I fell out on the deck the first part of September and landed on my left knee.  I fell really, really hard and that thing is still bothering me.  I know I had to bruise it really deep, if not fracture a bone.  I probably also set it up to get osteoarthritis in it faster than I normally would have too.  But I'll wait and let x-rays and the doctor tell me that.  Right now, I'm thinking the pain is still from the fall.   Probably with you too this soon afterwards.

I agree with tomcat. I have degenerative disc disease and osteoarthritis, and mild scoliosis.
Having scoliosis, you do put more strain on one side of the body, which can affect your hip.
I thought I had hip pain, but it was actually my illiac crest that was hurting, from strain on one side.
Keep on with your exercises you learned in physio, exercise is good for arthritic people.
It is easy to diagnose, your doctor should be able to let you know after simple x-rays.
Hope you feel better soon.

Hannah,

With me having paralysis on the right side of my body, so all the weight is shifted to the left side.  The cause of me falling so much is due to numerous of things is, low potassium, low blood sugar, and balance...since one leg is shorter than the other (from the stroke).

I know physical therapy will definitely help me cope with the pain.

Thank you for replying, Hannah

Hi Andrea
You're welcome.  I know Jen is getting married in a couple of days and really busy .  But there are many members here with OA, and if you have any questions about it just ask.
Your local Arthritis Society can be really helpful as well they have a great web page chock full of helpful information, if you do find out you have OA.

Andrea, we've told Jenn she's to stay away from the board until she gets back from her honeymoon unless she wants to post a brief message about something, but under no circumstances is she to answer any. Sorry about that, but she's simply too busy right now with all the myriad details surrounding her upcoming wedding, and she needs to be able to concentrate on that, and her visiting family and friends right now. Also, she is not a doctor, and should not be put in the position of trying to diagnose ANYONE, either in person or over the Internet; it's not fair to her to ask her to try. She does her utmost to use her training to help everyone here, but asking her to diagnose you is dangerous to YOU and possibly to her future as a physical therapist. Please don't put her in that position again; you need to get a proper diagnosis from your doctor, and he or she should then refer you to a physical therapist. Only then should you take any therapy concerns to Jenn. Ok? : ) With the paralysis and weakness on your right side, you should certainly be using some kind of support, I should think, especially if you're experiencing falls more often. Talk to your doctor about a walker or a leg brace or something to help you with better support so you won't be falling so much.

Cyndy

Thank you all for the replies.   I know that nobody is a doctor here, and the Internet is not a place to find or get diagnosed...I am aware of that!

I am also, aware that Jenn is getting married theen going off to her honeymoon.  So, really I didn't expect "her" be the one to answer my questions or for her suggestions. I mentioned at the bottom of my second post that maybe other members might have any ideas and/or share their experiences.

Anyway, thank you again.
