Mobility, Getting Around
  • Put a plastic bag on your car seat, so when you need to swival to get out, your behind glides easily.  My husbands Aunt shared that, her nurse told her this tip when she had her hip replacement done.-Hannah

For people who have trouble sitting up in bed from a lying
position, try tying a nylon rope to the lower legs so it's
about up to your waist at the center.  It shouldn't interfere
with your sleep as it would be on top of the bed covers, and
when you wake up you can use your arms to help pull you to a
sitting position.-Cyndy

You can purchase various styles of this.

  •

Hygiene and Dressing
  • Safety grab bars.  Beside the tub and toilet.

  • Shower chair.  If you have a plastic outside chair it will work, you can put some rubber foot caps on it so it won't slip.  You should have a rubber mat in the tub .-Hannah

  •

  • Short ankle socks.  Easy to pop on and off with minimal effort to sore hands and fingers.-Thrashed
  • Buy an extended reach grabber, great if you need to pick something up off the floor, or from up high.  I even use it for transferring laundry from the washing machine into the dryer, then out of the dryer.
  • Foot long shoe horn.  Simple, yet so useful when you can't reach your feet.  I bought several at the dollar store.-

Kitchen-useful kitchen aids

Hannah says
  • Use your countertop for cooking rather than your oven when possible.  I bought a crock pot and George Foreman Grill for that reason.  I learned you can even cook a roast in a crock pot.
  • Food chopper.  For chopping veggies and such.  I must say, mine isn't that great, but it is manual.  I am going to pick up an electric one.-Hannah
  • A microwave. Not only do these things make life easier, they also save electricity, and reduce green house gas emmissions

  • I would like to add that a toaster oven is another item that is very helpful.  You can do just about anything in there you can do in an oven and it's at counter height.  I recommend the DeLonghi brand.  I'm on my second one and they get great reviews by Consumer Reports for value.  The first one was still working, but it just got so stained from continual use after several years that I replaced it with a newer model.

Dee says

Dan:I have that DeLonghi toaster oven...and they are the best one going.  We went through more dang toaster ovens...and then finally bought the DeLonghi.  What a difference it made...and it sure beat any of the other ones...hands down!  It certainly was worth the $$$$.  We wasted more money on buying other brands...this one is a real gem!

  • I cannot function with my double wall oven.  I cannot use a free standing oven....it's much too low for me...and bending over causes more back pain.  I used it a few times when I was living with my daughter...and was SO happy to be in our own home...with our double wall oven!!!  What a difference it makes!  I've hardly ever used the bottom one....do use it for keeping things warm...or when I'm baking cookies for the holidays...but that's the only times.  And the good thing is that both are self cleaning...although I've never cleaned the bottom one....yet...it's still clean!!!

Household aids

Winter, snow and ice issues

Soothing the pain

Thrashed says
  • Wax bath.  These let the heat soak into your joints and give some blessed relief.
  • Jetted hot tub.  'Nuff said.

Hannah says

  • Tennis balls for massage Yes, they make niftly little massagers.  Put them underneath your back when in bed or sitting and just roll them around.  Good for knots.
  • Wheat husk neck pillow.  I chill it in the freezer (In a plastic bag) then tuck it around my neck in bed.  The coolness helps reduce inflamation and the husks mold to make a custom support for your neck.
  • Gel bags for hot or cold.  Small ones are only 2 dollars each, and are great for inflamation or stiffness.  I wrap it in a dry facecloth and keep it closed with a  painters tape.

Dee says

  •  Someone on another site also suggested making "gel" ice packs...with Palmolive soap...and then water....and put in Ziploc bag...double bag them so they don't leak.
You can freeze these....they make great ice packs.-Dee
Jen says
  • Break large tasks into smaller ones.  In terms of vacuuming for example, do one room, or half a room at a time. No need to do the whole house at once.  For doing dishes, do a few at a time, then go back later and finish the rest.  I find that by doing them after each meal, they don't have the chance to pile up on me.
