Side effects from Methadone are much like any other narcotic. If you get too hefty a dose, you'll get sleepy and lethargic. Otherwise, you should not get too many side effects. It should just take your pain away. Constipation is one side effect that's common to almost all narcotics. There are some other less common side effects. Ask your pharmasist for a handout with them listed if you really want all of them. Take care, guy Dan |

You're welcome. Methadone is a particularly safe drug, I think. Some people don't do well with it. But you would know already if you didn't. Those who don't have an allergy to it. There are no long term side effects either, that I'm aware of. It metabolizes easily through the kidneys, if I'm not mistaken, and it's been used for years and years by people without any harmful effects. Dan |

This is my second month on Methadone and I am still working towards the dosage that will work for me. I do notice that I feel more alert than with other pain meds. I am taking 10mg every eight hours, but it is not quite enough for me. I see my doc next month and will take it from there. If this doesn't work it is back to morphine and starting the neverending process all over again. Bless you, |

I decided I would desperately like to speak to somebody about how to be comfortable at home 1.5 yrs after neck fusion . Is there somebody who would be kind enough to speak with me to help me? I am having great trouble finding ANY CHAIR to sit in. I would prefer recliner-type chair that is oK for the neck fusion without causing excruciating back pain because there is not enough back support. The back pain is debilitating me greatly. Because of the way the room is set-up, I can’t lie on a couch because I would need to twist my fused neck to see the TV. Please email me thru a private message and I will provide my phone number and call you back at my expense. In return, I am quite well-trained medically and in cervical and lumbar stuff so that I can probably help you, also. |

I should clarify that my backpain is the most debilitating right now. (No surgeries on the back, just the neck so far). Is there somebody who has searched thru different types of chairs and found anything doo to sit on? |

Hi I am Paul and I use methadone for pain and like Dan said there are no real side effects except for the constipation and just sleepyness at times. It works well for my pain because I have pain in neck- both arms- lower back- hip and leg pain all from nerve damage from surgeys. Hope that helps- you may find you need to get the right dose for your pain level and remember that you always will have some pain even with taking any kind of narcodics for pain but if you can get your level down to a 3-4 out of 10 then you are doing good- I am at 5 most of the time but find it managable. Best of luck Paul |

i have been on methadone for over three years now with few side effects.I will say that after that long there are starting to be times when it does not control my pain. Also I would take the smallest dose possible to control the pain because if you run out or have to be changed to another med you could go through some pretty severe withdrawal symtoms. good luck |

Hi, Cosmeticearth4. I'm going to assume you're female, since not many guys would name themselves "cosmetic something..." Welcome to the family. Unless I'm really loosing it, I don't think I've seen you hear before. And I want to be sure and try to welcome newcomers. I'm sure some of the others will say hello too. We are a family, all united by the one thing... constant pain 24/7. We all know about that and what it does to us and those we love. Well, we have one spouse here of a husband who's in chronic pain. But she's family too. So welcome. Let us know how we can help. Thanks for chming in about the methadone. You're right of course, but that really applies for any narcotic. We recommend that any pain patient asks for the minimum amount of narcotic needed to deal with the pain, and then keep a pain diary to facilitate communication between you and your doctor. The5re's a lot of information over on the left. Let us know what we can do to help, OK? Lots of love and healing hugs, Dan |

I am taking methadone for pain control. It works very well. The doctor started me at a very small dosage though - 5 mg three times a day. He is hoping to increase the level of methadone while decreasing the oxycontin. The methadone seems to work very well for that deep bone pain. It also does not seem to cause as much sleepiness as the oxycontin does, at least for me. And financially, methadone is much cheaper. Good luck - hope it helps you. |
