I have been on Lantus since about 2006 and I have continued to tell the FNP and my now Dr., that I am so short of breath on it. They act like they don't believe me or that I'm making it up. Does anyone else on Lantus have this shortness of breath problem?
Thanks, StephK |

Steph, I've been on Lantus for 6 years and haven't noticed any shortness of breath. I do experience shortness of breath once a month close to a certain date, if you know what I mean..... But please, if you feel and believe that it is because of the Lantus.... don't give up on making those dr's believe you.... you know better than they do and even though it might not be listed as a side effect or whatever, that's not saying you're not experiencing it. Maybe someone else can give you some more clarity.... keep an eye on it, hon. Peace,Cheryl |

Steph, have you done a google search for Latus side effects? That my throw up something for you. There are lots of reports of different side effects from it so you might find your problem amongst them. Would it be posible to come off of Lantus and try something else? If so and the symptoms clear up you know it is the Lantus. Best wishes S, |

I had the same thing in mind that SarahQ mentioned...try doing without the Lantus, and possibly even following with additional short acting insulin, if required. Make sure you check with your doctor before using yourself as a test lab, of course! And carefully monitor your sugars. There can be many causes for shortness of breath. Please rule out any more serious causes! Anything from physical exercise to heart and kidney problems can cause that symptom. You don't want to just assume it's the Lantus, before ruling out other issues. As had been said, just because a manufacturer doesn't list a symptom among its normal, expected side effects, does not mean it can't happen. But sometimes when we do not want to take a med, "side effects" can arise. I've never had shortness of breath from Lantus, and I've been on it since 2006. But if you get short of breath with lows, perhaps that is the reason? And high sugars can cause diffiulty in breathing, as well. What is you glucose level when you experience the breathing problems? Of course, if you experiece chest pain along with the breathing problems, go to an ER to be checked out, OK? Hope you feel better! HUGS! sheryl |

Thanks for the input. I checked on Google but that apparently is not one of the side effects, although it could happen. I'll talk to my dr again on Monday when I have an appt. StephK |

Well I went to the doc appt and told him again, and it went right over his head and he never commented. I had borderline pneumonia and bronchitis a few weeks ago and was doing nebulizer treatments. The home care company RT came by yesterday to check on me, and he's going to set me up with a pulse oximeter to check my readings for 24 hours. Hopefully, we can find out something by that. The RT asked me a lot of questions and my answers indicated maybe sleep apnea, so we shall see. Thanks for the caring ev1. It's great to know that someone cares.

Hi Steph, sorry you had a deaf Dr It's just a suggestion, but what about saying to the Dr "I would to try Levemir" and insist that you try it or any other basal for that matter. but best to pick a name and stick to it so then you can fight your corner easier. It's your body not his. If he isn't listening then can you change to another Dr? |

I found through trial and error that my shortness of breath and nasal congestion was caused by Lantus when I went off of it and switched to Levemir. My endo even noted that side effect on my records and on her own personal records in case any of her other patients reported similar side effects. She also said that she had had one other patient with the exact same outcome when they switched to Levemir so it wasn't "all in my head" or something else; just a reaction to Lantus on my part and apparently on at least one other of her diabetic patients. So many drugs can cause different reactions in people so investigation of everything is in order especially when shortness of breath is involved. Hope you soon find out what is causing your problems. Keep us updated. Thanks Marge |

Hi JumpingJude, I take one dose of Lantus in the afternoon and one after midnight. I work nights 11 pm to 3 am so that's why I do those time. I went to the ER again the other night with SOB, wheezing, nasal congestion, sore throat and earache, and I have a bad sinus infection with allergies. The doc gave me 60 mg of prednisone, which raised my BS to over 600. If anyone didn't know steroids raise your BS significantly high. I now am taking 1 tab a day and will be adding Humalog sliding scale while I'm on it.
Have a great day ev1..sorry for small font but I forgot to change from Firefox to IE.

Steph, Hope you get to the bottom of your SOB,etc. Prednisone is not fun to have to take at all, really shoots those sugars up. Take care Marge |
