A young group of adventurers began their journey at an adventurer's guild in the port city of Marquise looking for work, and work they found.  The city hadn't seen or heard from the family that ran the lighthouse at the end of the swampy peninsula 3 days trek away for weeks, nor had any ship travel come from that direction either.  This group was sent out to find out what happened, and find out they did.

A few days into their trek through the swamp, they came upon a tribe of somewhat civilized lizard folk, an almost unheard of event.  From them they found out that pirates and taken the lighthouse and smashed the lamp, set up a false lighthouse further inland, and had been luring ships to their demise before plundering the wreckage.  With help from the lizard folk, the young adventurers defeated the pirates and brought word of what had happened back to Marquise, where they were received as heroes.

Now with a small amount of fame to their names, they were asked to help the people of Duvik's Pass.  A mysterious illness, incurable by any known means, had struck the mining community and anyone who had entered the silver mine recently had not been heard from again.  Quickly realizing the well was tainted after arriving, the group headed into the mines to see if they could solve this riddle.

Once in, they found a sickly group of Kobolds that had taken up residence.  At first they were unfriendly, and the group had no choice but to kill a few and lost one of their own.  After regrouping and teaming up with a Paladin of Lathander, they headed back into the mine and had parley with the kobold leader.  Apparently, their dead had gone missing and there was some sort of demon taking up residence deeper in the mine.  Taking this information, they drove on to find that the demon was an orcish necromancer and the stolen dead had become his minions!  The adventurers dealt with this threat, and were thanked as best as the community of Duvik's Pass could manage in their hard times.

On their way back to Marquise, they ran into the Duke Ostral of Marquise, the head of the Marquise adventurers' guild and a famed warrior, Malgun Rutas, and a dozen guards fighting off a band of more than 2 dozen orcs.  Eventually, the Duke was captured and the party's horses taken.  Malgun was the only one of those the adventurers had come across left alive and uncaptured by the orcs.

From Malgun, the group found out that Drow had appeared from the forest to the south by night and had attacked.  Drow had not been seen since the great wars of legends thousands of years ago when they had been defeated with magic of the kind that has also never been seen since.  Rumor had it that since they had not been seen, they must have been utterly destroyed, which is now known to be false.  Only the Wizard's University, home to some of the most powerful wizards in the land, was able to protect itself through powerful magical barriers, and the rest of the city was pronounced lost and those who could escape or find shelter within the university did so.  The orcs had seen Malgun and the Duke fleeing to the capital to bring news to the king and bring the king's cousin (the Duke) to safety, and had taken advantage of the situation and attempted to seize a valuable hostage.  Obviously they had succeeded.

The group sent an animal messenger ahead with a note for the king before going to retrieve the Duke.  They found a back entrance into the orc camp and fought their way to free the Duke.  During the attack, Malgun, the greatest warrior in the land, lost his hand in an unfortunate blow and progressed to become a bumbling, self pitying coward only useful for bashing down doors and carrying things over his shoulders.

After escaping, they were pursued by orcs, but after 2 days managed to hook up with a squad of the kings men that had been sent to find them, and were escorted to the capital.  The group is separated from Duke Ostral and Malgun then given first aid/healing and rooms (the ranger is allowed to keep his wolf with him as long as he keeps him on a leash when they are not in the group's quarters.)   There is a small sitting room right off a hallway, and each of their rooms branches off from this sitting room.  All of it is ornately decorated in the royal red and gold, and each room has a plush bed, wardrobe, vanity, chair, and a tub full with hot water.  In the sitting room, there is a central table with bowls of fruit, goblets, bottles of wine, and a bit of mutton.  The table is surrounded by 4 plush chairs, one of which has a large pillow next to it, perfect for a large dog type animal to rest on.

The group is led into this room and told that they will be summoned in the morning and that if they need anything, to ask the guards posted outside the door.

Jade is mildly impressed at how quickly Snake answers the riddles, and is also mildly amused at Bart's excitement and enthusiasm for the riddles.  She listens as Charity reads the riddle from the book in front of them, and ponders for a moment.  Unfortunately, she is stumped as well.  "I've never been too good at solving riddles.. I'm not sure either." Jade shrugs,  "I wonder why all these riddles are here in the first place?"  She thinks aloud.  She can't help but wonder if the answers are essential to the journey or a distraction placed there to keep the group from continuing on their way...

Snake begins moving around again...wondering what these statues were made for.  He steps up to one of the maidens and looks her square in the eye, like he's staring her down or something.  It's quite comical, actually.

"An' whas yer story, missus?  Mmmm?? Nice book ye got 'ere..." he says, seeing the hand imprint on the right side of the book. ( Int check: 2+10 modifier = 12, pass.  As per email sent...)

"'ey, do all dese ladies 'ere have hand imprints on the right side o' the books?" he inquires, bouncing around to check it out.  Sure enough, all of them had the hand imprints.  He goes to the riddle book containing the "whip" riddle,  "whip.......cmon y'all...git up on dese statues and put yer hand in the book.  Either dat or speakin' the riddles answer while we be doin' it...?"

"Very good, Nothus!"

The wizard was honestly impressed that one so apparently dull-witted was able to answer the two riddles he had read to the group. As Charity read out another riddle Bart's face twisted into a look of concentration and he slowed to a walk. He let out a soft 'hmmmm' as he scratched his chin thinking hard about this one. A few paces later the smile suddenly returned to his face, even brighter than before:

"Salt!"

As he reaches statue number two, he quickly reads the riddle to himself. Not even pausing to think he follows Nothus' lead and places his hand on the book saying in a clear and confident tone:

"The letter 'M'"

OoC: Sorry for the ugly post, I'm at home and this particular comp. doesn't seem to like working right.

((OOC: E-mail on the way to those not informing me that they wouldn't be posting.))

Bart compliments Snake on his find and immediately proceeds to see if the thief was right.

As Bart speaks the answer to the riddle, the statue looks up from its book, the blank stare of its eyes looking directly into Bart's.  After a brief moment, the statue nods and raises the sphere into the air above its head, its gaze following it.  All of a sudden, the sphere flashes brightly and begins glowing (think of turning on a 70W light bulb, only the size of your head) and cracks glowing with light begin appearing, first at the hand holding the sphere then working their way down the statues arm and over the rest of its body as if the cracks were quickly growing vines.  Once the cracks cover the entire statue, it looks back down to Bart, its eyes glowing with the same bright light as the sphere.  Then, as quickly as the sphere flashed to life the statue crumbles in thousands of pieces varying from a half in by half in to pieces the size of your fist.  The glowing sphere still hovers about 8 feet above the ground, glowing with light.

Jade watches in awe as the statue in front of Bart begins to glow and then crumbles to the ground at his feet.  It's a good thing Melman weren't here, she was pretty sure he wouldn't be very receptive of statues bursting into light and exploding... "Are you alright Bart?" she asks, taking a step toward him to better see if he is safe and sound.  As long as he seems alright, she moves toward the statue whose riddle answer was 'salt.'  She places her hand on the book in the same manner that Bart had done, and speaks in a loud voice,  "Salt!"  She then braces herself for the statue's reaction.

(OOC: sorry for the late post everyone, I lost track of time and didn't realize it was Friday until I recieved the email.  It won't happen again!)

Bart watches in awe as the statue comes to life.  He squints and shields his eyes as the large sphere begins to glow.  When the statue crumbles, Bart instinctively leaps back, surprised at the sudden destruction of the living statue.  “Well, that certainly seems to have worked,” he says as soon as it seems the process is done.  “Come on, we ought to get the rest of them.”  He assures Jade that he is just fine as he runs to the next statue (number 10 on the map) and begins to read the riddle.

((OOC:  Int. checks on the way for the remaining 6 statues Reyco))

Snake grins wildly as the statue crumbles to the ground in front of them all.  He had figured it out and now they were finally getting somewhere!  He chews his lip through the excitement.

"Ain't ye wizerds 'sposed to be the smart uns?  Cmon y'all, everyone get on a statue....he says, placing his hand into the imprint..."whip!"

As Bart reaches statue number 10 he quickly reads through the riddle.  Still smiling he places his hand on the book and says:

"A penguin!"

Jade and Snake observe Bart's actions while answering the riddle and follow suit with those in front of them.  The actions of those statues are the same as the one Bart had answered as they too crumble into a pile of obsidian shards, leaving behind floating white orbs.

Bart moves to statue 10 and after reading the riddle, thrusts his hand onto the tome, and shouts an answer.  "Penguin", something most of the others had probably never even heard of before.  The statue looks Bart in the eyes and after a pause, it shakes its head "no".  With unexpected speed, it swings its left arm (the one clutching the orb) at Bart, trying to backhand him. (roll:17, hit)  Bart, apparently not expecting the statue to attack him, doesn't react in time as the stone hand connects solidly with his face and sends him sprawling across the floor. (Dmg: 4)  With Bart on the ground, the statue drops its tablet, which shatters into small pieces upon hitting the ground, and draws the longsword from it's hip.

Meanwhile, Achilles had watched the others answer the riddles of the statues and decided to do the same himself.  Placing his hand on the tome of statue 8 he announces his guess "A wooden fish".  Like Bart, the statue shakes its head. (Due to Achilles not posting in 4 weeks and not sending the DM an e-mail, all attack rolls on him are automatically critical hits until he posts).  Achilles hears the sound of a sword being drawn behind him and turns to look, a big mistake.  His own statue brings the orb up slightly above its head then swings it sharply down at Achilles' skull and connects with a loud "CRACK"! (Crit hit, Double Dmg:2+3=5, Con Check: 15, pass) The paladin crumbles to the ground and although he almost passes out, he manages to shake the stars out of his vision and begin to slowly crawl away from his attacker.  The statue drops its tablet, which shatters upon hitting the floor, and draws its sword.

Meanwhile, Charity who had been moving for statue 3, stops in her tracks and turns to survey the seen (as per e-mail to DM).    Jade does the same.

((Statues 1, 2, & 4 down. 10 and 8 are on animated with Bart and Achilles at each of heir feet respectively.  Jade is by the shards of statue 1, Snake by those of statue 4, Charity is between Snake and Jade.  Combat had commenced and time is now moving in rounds.  Send 1d10 initiative rolls via irony as well as any attack rolls and possible damage.))

All he can see are little flickers of light rotating as if he were on a rollercoaster. In a few moments, as he comes back to his sences, he notices some warm water dripping down his face. He quickly realizes that it wasnt water but his own blood. Having taken such significant damange, Achilles tries to roll away from his attacker since standing up and moving away at the same time would probably chance another blow. Once he has rolled away far enough that he is out of weapons range, he tries to stand up and try to unseath his sword and grabhold his sheild so that he may take a fighting stand and defeat this Foe for he stood in the way of our quest to reassble the staff or darlanis. In the name of all that is good and holy, he must be defated.
