I am looking for James McCabe. I do not know his year of birth or place of birth! However he was living in Leith, Edinburgh, in the years 1906 -1911 at least, and was working as a dock labourer. When in Leith, he was living at 6 Hamilton Street, Leith. He had 3 children with a Mary Eagleson - James 1907, John 1909, and Catherine 1911, and all three children were given the surname McCabe. It is thought that he may have had a wife back in Ireland, and that is the reason he didn't marry Mary Eagleson. He may well have been born between 1875 and 1880, as that would tie in with the age of Mary Eagleson at the time the children were born. I would be grateful for any help in finding where James came from, and where he went to after 1911. Thanks Margaret

Hello I have still not had any luck in my search for James McCabe, and wondered if anyone has come across him in their searches. I live in hope that one day I might get the breakthrough, as I would love to know more about this side of my family Regards Margaret

Genes Reunited had the entries included here: that fit the name, timespan and location you believe i.e. Ireland. Search Results for James McCabe in all trees There are 8 results matching your search for James McCabe. To find out more about these matches, send a message to the tree owner to see if you share ancestors. I haven't sent off messages yet in case another manager has already done so. There were many more lised but figured easier to start with most likely group first and work backwards, lol. Are you a member of genes reunited yourself. It does cost to join I will warn you. So you see just when you wondered where james was hiding he is most likely in the forest of James trees making it near impossible to spot him from a distance. Let us know if you have membership. We don't like to request information twice and bug other researchers when not necessary. Bye Suzanne |

From: Hibee1981 Sent: 2008/10/09 02:06 PM Hi there folks A colleague and friend of mine Gordon McCabe stumbled across the e-mail below regarding 'James McCabe' while trying to do some family research. He believes that he may have some information that the user 'margwxs' may find useful. I came across an e-mail address for her but it comes back, "undelivered". The e-mail he tried to send is below. Many thanks. Sent: 08/04/2007 15:11 I had a great uncle called James McCabe, I see from your e-mail you quote an address of 6 Hamilton Street, Leith. According to my great grandfather's death certificate and my grandfather's wedding certificate, 6 Hamilton Street was also the home address. My great uncle was born in 1880, according to your e-mail was also the date you have given. He was killed in the Battle of the Somme in the First World War. Hope this ties up with what you are looking for and hope to hear from you soon. Hello Gordon It was a member called Margaret, nickname "margwxs", who was researching the McCabe family some time back. She hasn't been on site for a while, and I cannot locate her e-mail address at the moment. Next time she comes on site she will no doubt see your message and respond. But if I can find her address in the meantime I shall leave a message for you. Marian aka ConnemaraKate Manager |

Hello Marian Thank you so much for passing on the message about my relative - James McCabe. I don't know why my email address wasn't working, as I have checked my details and the correct email address is definitely there. However I am just so overwhelmed that Hibee1981 took the trouble to post the message from his work colleague, Gordon McCabe I have emailed Gordon and will let you know the outcome. I must admit I never thought I would find James, as I knew so little about him, except the address that was on my fathers birth certificate. My grandmother and James were not married, but had 3 children together. I am still reeling from the shock of getting your message today. I am sorry I don't get in here very often, but since May I have only been home for a total of 3 weeks, but have now got myself mobile broadband, so I can access groups when I am away - it has more than earned it monthly cost today!!!!! Many many thanks, as you don't know just how much this means to me - I feel quite choked up at the moment as I never thought it would happen. Regards Margaret

Hello Marian Just thought I would update you on James McCabe and the previous messages. I have been in contact with Gordon McCabe on quite a few occasions now - we are definitely cousins, and I have discovered a whole new branch of family!! I sent a photo to Gordon, of my father, and his wife could see a family likeness!! We are in the process of exchanging family details, which is taking a while, as Gordon does not have a computer, except at work. He has already sent me some of the family details, and is shortly sending me some photos and more information - It is so great to have found LIVING relatives!! as well as more early deceased ones. I have now discovered that my grandfather died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, in 1916, and was awarded the Military Medal after his death. I will be going up to Scotland in 2010, and we are hoping to meet up!! Thank you so much for the help I have received from the group. Am still looking for more though!! Regards Margaret

Hi Margaret Thank you for updating us. How exciting for you to be sharing photos and information with your new-found cousin! I think we can all identify with that. And it will be wonderful when you finally meet up with Gordon in Scotland in 2010 -- not so long to wait really. Best wishes from us all Marian |
