Hyena

Hyenas are greedy scavengers and predators who roam and scout the arid soil of the Kalahari and Namib Desert of Africa. Whether the brown or the stripped variety, they may be seen traveling as a group or pack looking for the right opportunity to feed on leftovers from a lion or leopard kill. They will make due with fruits and vegetables, marine organism and even insects when fresh meat is scarce. They are known for their sinister laughing howl that echoes out over the desert floor. They are very aggressive with their prey and even with each other. They play rough and their vicious nawing and biting can leave young hyenas with serious scars on their neck. They have a good side though. They serve each other's young. Mothers take turns feeding the young in their intimate community.
If hyena is your totem you may have some real lessons and challenges in the future with greedy people. Someone may wish to harm you in order to get what they want for themselves. Maybe a gang or a bully in your class wishes they had your favorite jacket as their own. Bullies seldom have you in mind or care if they hurt others either. Don't give it up or let them convince you that they will be your friend, if you do. Never think that someone who is a bully will ever be your friend or leave you alone if you give them what they want. Once they get what they want from you they will insist on more. They will never stop harrassing you and your friends until someone draws the line. Tell an adult if you run into a pack of snarling hyena types. A hard line will have to be drawn by someone who is at least six feet tall and has you in mind.
Hyena wants you to understand greed and hatred never deserves anyone's generosity. It goes against Great Spirit's laws of abundance as well as the rules of society. Hyena may add that you should never let your own greed run you into the ground. There is plenty to go around. Your greedy intentions spoil your heart. "Nothing is wasted in the desert". says hyena. Hyena shares with its group because there is enough to go around.
