Shark
Whether a hammerhead or a tiger shark, sharks are aggressive predators in the oceans of the world. They are known for their excellent sensory devices for smelling and picking up the vibration of their prey over a long distance. They feed on fish, crabs, turtles and even garbage. Once in a great while they will attack a human swimming offshore.
In Hawaiian culture the shark is known to be a powerful ally. His Hawaiian name is mano. It is said by Hawaiian elders that someone who befriends the shark will always be protected in the ocean waters when swimming or fishing. Hawaiians often wear a shark tooth around their neck to ward of a shark attack.
If shark is your animal medicine, it is with you so that you can conquer your fears. "Fear, says shark, will hold you back from doing the simplest things". Be brave and go forward without fear in your heart and life will get easier day by day. Everyone needs a little push to do the things they are afraid of. Whether it is diving off the high dive for the first time or asking a boy to dance at the sock hop, you will have the courage to push through your fear with shark at your side.
Shark teaches you that fears sometimes are irrational. You talk yourself into being afraid by imagining the worst case scenario. Real danger is something to be afraid of, but most of the time you fear the silliest things. How many times did you imagine some boogy man hiding in your closet or under your bed when you were little? You probably conquered that fear long ago. But now you may have other unreasonable fears like if I eat lunch I will gain weight or if take the bus I might fall asleep and miss my stop. Conquering fear is easier when you have someone like your mom or dad to push you through them. But if you think they are tired of suffering with you over your irrational fears, ask shark to swim with you in your dreams at night and you will wake up with more courage.
