Black Cohosh
Black Cohosh Herb is native to North America and used by the Natives to treat malaise, gynecological disorders, sore throat, kidney disorders, malaria, and rheumatism. Today Black Cohosh is used mainly to treat symptoms in menopausal women.
Black Cohosh contains two beneficial compounds Phytoestrogen and Salicylic Acid. Salicylic Acid is used to make asprin and has anti-inflammatory and pain relieving effects, thus helping with the headaches, heart palpitations and sleep disturbances that afflict many menopausal women. The compound Phytoestrogen may offset the decline of estrogen by binding to hormone receptors in the uterus, breast, and other parts of the body possibly lessening hot flashes, vaginal dryness, dizziness, depressive moods and other hormone-related symptoms. Because Black Cohosh has antispasmodic properties, may be useful in treating painful cramping due to PMS.
There are many ways you can take Black Cohosh, through pill form, tincture and infusion (tea).
Through my research I have found that it varies greatly on the amount to take daily in pill form.
I have found no adverse side affects from taking too much. But did come across that in rare cases, if taken too large a dose can cause dizziness, headaches, giddiness, nausea or vomiting. Black Cohosh should not be mistaken for Blue Cohosh,(also known as squawroot, blueberry root, or papoose root)as blue cohosh is used for different indications and has greater potential for toxicity.
Black Cohosh has a bitter taste and may cause upset stomach so it would be advisable to take with a meal and allow up to 8 weeks of use to see benefits for menopausal symptoms. Caution: Consult your Dr. before using if you have a history of heart disease, are taking contraceptives, pregnant breastfeeding. or if you have been advised to not take oral contraceptives.
For Muscle Aches and Pains:
Apply a warm compress that has been soaked in Black Cohosh Infusion to the affected area for about 20 minutes. Make the infusion by boiling the dried root for 20 to 30 minutes. Let cool slightly before applying.
Decoction:
Use 2 tsp dried root and boil in one pint water. Take up to 2-3 tablespoons up to 6 times a day. Best to drink cold. If you are interested in the tincture take 1 tsp a day. If you are taking the fluid extract, take between 5-30 drops a day (1/4-1/2 tsp)
