I've had a variety of spiritual contact with animals: mostly cats and dogs, but occasionally birds and spiders.  Since I don't know of any vision problems you may have, I'll provide my thoughts on what a canine spirit may be trying to tell you.  Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), coincidentally, results in the formation of dog bone-shaped pigments on the retina.  I can rule out RP in your case since one does not see dog bones as a side effect.

 

Since so many people become convinced that these beings by whom they're visited in the night are figments of their imagination, the dog may be attempting to reveal evidence of his/her Earthly existence for you.  There's more likelihood of love and bonding if the dog is perceived as real rather than a hallucination.  My Great Aunt's dog, Buster, who died of complications from kidney tumors, hopped onto me in spirit on the evening of his death years ago, and I gave him a big hug.  We'd bonded instantly on the day that I met him, and while my Aunt was one of the sweetest women I ever knew, he preferred my company to hers.  But Buster was his own dog, not mine, and not my Aunt's.
