How are you Ubergato, I need some advise and I believe you are the wise cat I must seek out. I know along with many other individuals that there has been a sort of dark cloud hanging around. It has loomed approximatly 3.5 feet ofer the north end of me. This cloud dosn't seem too ominous. It does seem to be dampering my "Odd" sense of houmr. Considering the tons of saddnes and anger that we are all feeling as a country, I have found my humor slanting towards being a bit cinical, maybe even a bit morbid, yet still humorous I think. I have thought several times about posts I would like to do, but was afraid that they might be seen as 'negative' or at worst 'not funny at all.. Now, with no where to express myself, I find myself not feeling too Odd.... would you give me a few of the outer guidelines, or your opinion on this type of humor being posted here... Thank You... ~V |

Hi Verbage, Ubi will be along shortly. I know what you mean about the anger and saddness. I am barely functioning through it these days. Humor can be a healing thing. It is necessary, it lets life go on. We need it. Having said that, the only guidelines I can give you (Ubi is so much wiser than I could ever be) is that when you are doubting or questioning something you want to post, then step away from it a little. Remember that we have many very young people, many otherwise very vulnerable people, and many who have been very directly involved in the events. Try to think how it would effect them. Also remember when you post something, sometimes other people will come along and take an otherwise benign post and take it ten degrees south. It is the nature of group dynamics, we either bouy (I know I spelled that wrong) each other up and get us all through these times together, or we can contribute something that does otherwise. And I don't know how to predict the reaction a post will get. Or we can be silent and go a little crazy. There is just no choice that is absolutly going to be right for everyone. It is cathartic to write, I know. Another thing that you can do, is when you are in the mood to do something like that, go ahead and write it. And then, instead of posting it here you can send it to Ubi. He will get back to you on that, I promise. Or write it and save it for a less sensitive time. |

Hi there Verbage. HGP said it very well I think. We all have periods when we are feeling down or less than happy with the world. This anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11 affects us all as americans and as individuals. I established Odd People as a place of refuge from the harsh realities of the world and a place where we can come to laugh , share, and heal. From time to time we all post things which tend to be more on the cynical or morbid side. It is my job as manager of this site to try and decide what falls on the outside of our guidelines and to either edit the posts slightly or to delete them entirely. This is not done to invalidate someone's thoughts or humor, but to keep our board focused toward the healing side of laughter. I have even gone back into the archives and deleted some of my earliest posts which I thought did not fit in with our guidelines. The best way of course if you ever have any doubt on something you want to post, is to just email it first to me at [email protected] and I will reply to you immediately when I receive it on whether or not I think it is appropriate. While this may seem somewhat arbitrary to some, I honestly try to use my best judgement and walk the fine line between removing something inappropriate to our guidelines and stifling creativity on the boards. I hope that I do a good job of it but I may sometimes err to the side of caution. The only thing I can say is that we are halfway into our third year of existence here at Odd People and we have completely avoided any of the conflicts and turmoil that seem to plague many humor communities. We have grown to over 2,340 lovely, talented, witty and supportive people bound together by a love of clean humor and laughter. You Verbage, are an important part of our community and I hope to see your witty posts and contributions here for many years to come. :>) For further answer to your question, I would refer you to the lovely Odderata written by our own Happyguppypuppy. May your days be of peace and good cheer! (gives you a big cat hug) Ubergato (Overcatus Humorus) |

First let me thank you both for your lovely spirits! Boy was that a call to arms...you both were masterful in your gentle managment! BRAVO!! Then...I would never...(but I am glad we discussed it for all to see.)..make light of a tradgedy, or the pain and misfortune of others....ok, well my Sister Sherri, but not online anyway...lol(example). And you are both so right about the affect some posts can induce...I know that first hand..which was the purpose of my request for a more visible boundry at this end of the humor stick. And one last thing... ya gotta admit!.....Verbage used her brainage before she became verbose...and to both of you..I will follow your advice verbatem.. (you guys ROCK!) ~Verbage' (LOL the accent...) |
