From my point of view, the very notion of having a personal web page, or a Facebook account, or asomething of this type is just an exercise in egotism. After all, just what is there about my life or personal experiences that would warrant a read. Should the world be that voyeuristic about my life, my moods, and my opinions? Also, isn't this self-indulgence a sordid sin against demureness? If Andy Warhol was right, and each of us are entitled to 15 minutes of fame, I don't want to squander my 15 minutes on some postadolescent self-indulgent navel-grazing. It's the least I can do for my fellow man, woman, or dog. |

I see your point, especially in this climate of instant disclosure regarding everything. Look at all of us (myself included) in our posting of our Blogthings results. Still, it's kind of juicy to learn how New York or California someone happens to be. |

So what makes reticence and demureness a virtue? |

John Donne on Virginity (from Paradoxes and Problemes): "I call not that Virginity a vertue, which resideth only in the Bodies integrity. . . But I call that Virginity a vertue which is willing and desirous to yeeld it selfe upon honest and lawfull terms, which just reason requireth; and until then, is kept with a modest chastity of Body and Mind." |

I would love to know the context of this passage. |

I agree, EPT. I may be overly cautious, or introverted or whatever...but I would no more put personal stuff out there for anybody to stumble across than, well, I don't know than what. LOL I cannot think of anything complete strangers need to know of my personal thoughts, actions, feelings or belongings. I know one of my kids had a my space diary for awhile. I don't know if she still does. At first she said it was a way to keep in touch with everyone, and then, as life does tend to change, there were some people she wasn't so happy knew everything. Or, could continue knowing whether she knew they were or not....The potential for embarassment at the least, and danger at the worst is too great for this coward! |
