Willie was an Estelline attraction. Everyone knew Willie, everyone loved Willie, and everyone helped Willie now and then. You see, Willie , fell off a tater truck years ago and it sorta jiggled up his brain and he was not like your average Estelline native. Willie didn't talk much , but lord , he could make noises. He wandered around town holding a steering wheel in front of him pretending he was driving a car. Pretending heck, to him he WAS driving a car. He would walk down the street and stop at all the stop signs, look both ways and then with his mouth making sounds like an engine, he would take off . Sometime he would take off smooth and when he was feeling like a teenager he would make noise like squealing tires . He was a case. He would come up to your store, lay his steering wheel on the curb walk in , do his business the go back out and there he would go. Everyone enjoyed Willie's antics and even people driving by on the highway would sometimes stop in awe of the little guy walking out in the middle of the road ,cruisin'. For years Willie had this old steering wheel that was cracked and wore. We all got together one Christmas and with the help of Jingle Bob's welding, Spooky's, tinkering and my locating just the right parts , we made Willie a steering wheel that neater than grandma's new teeth. He could even shift gears with it. Ol' Willie was about in tears when we gave it to him and never was anything taken better care of than Willie's steering wheel. He would wash it , wax it , and shine it like it was the most expensive Rolls Royce they ever made.
Well last March we lost ol' Willie. They found him about ten miles out of town toward Paducah. The doctor said Willies heart gave out, but because of everyones love for ol' Willie the doctor wrote on his report that Willie had simply run out of gas.
Willie's steering wheel hangs on the wall of the Department of Motor Vehicle License in Childress now. Bye Willie, Are you there yet?
