I can tell you about the Safe mode...is it still that way, or have you selectied to not show this screen box again?

Depending on the program you use it can be easy, or really easy to go into msconfig and check your startup settings. If you are unsure what to do there I would not do anything at all...and pay someone $20 to look into it for you, or have someone go through it with you on the phone...(I just couldn't let this go unanswered anylonger..)
